Santa Maria del Popolo
116 N. Lake St., Mundelein
After Archbishop George Mundelein became “the first cardinal of the West,” he wanted this new parish, in the town bearing his name, to have the same patron as his titular church in Rome: “St. Mary of the People.” (A copy of the historic Marian icon is in the parish chapel.) Today’s red brick church-school building was designed by Hal Chalmers in 1964. Statistics show a higher-than-usual lay involvement in this multi-cultural faith community, where Anglos and Hispanics are the majority. Dedicated and integrated, the parish council and other ministries spread the word, “There’s a lot to offer here for our life’s journey.” Evangelization will be a major effort in the coming year to draw people in who might otherwise drift. Thanks to the recent Millennium Project, a much needed parish center with gym, meeting and drama facilities will be ready by Februaryideal for their new traditionoriginal Lenten and Christmas plays in Spanish and English.
