Our Lady of the Mount
2414 S. 61st Avenue, Cicero
In Europe, this title of Mary comes from “the Lourdes of Czechoslovakia,” the holy hill in a village 40 miles south of Prague, site of many apparitions. Founded here in 1919, it is the last of our 10 national parishes organized by Bohemian Catholics who immigrated after World War I until 1929. They dedicated the Romanesque edifice, designed by Thomas M. Filas, in 1930. Today the parish’s faith life is actively expressed in three languages. The majority of parishioners are Mexican-Americans, with a kindred devotion to Our Lady of Guadalupe. Just 5 percent are Czech, but the parish has recently seen a renaissance in Czech culture. On special feasts nearly 500 Czech-Americans flock here from other areas. Its convent is now a Czech Catholic Center. Folk plays and dramas are getting a re-birth, translated into English or Spanish, performed for new audiences. Special concerts of Dvorak’s music salute this parish that symbolizes America’s melting pot.
