The human face of immigration
As Pope Francis has often said, “reality is greater than ideas.” That phrase comes to mind as I reflect on the ill-tempered remarks that are reported in the media vilifying migrants entering the United States. Words such as “criminals” and “terrorists,” among other depictions that portray these suffering families as subhuman because of their ethnicity or race, are very disturbing and just plain wrong. These words, and the ideas behind them, do not match the reality that we as a church have experienced over centuries of welcoming newcomers.

In 1992, Pope John Paul II called for a day of prayer for the sick, which began the practice of an annual World Day of the Sick on Feb. 11, the commemoration of Our Lady of Lourdes. This was very personal for the saintly pope, as a year earlier he had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, from which he suffered until his death in 2005.

A touch of heaven
As my siblings and I grow older, we often find ourselves filled with wonder and amazement as we think about how our parents managed to deal with all the challenges they faced in raising a family of nine children. There was neither a playbook for parenting, nor a whole lot of preparation.

Hope, the virtue that astonishes even God
Every Advent, a beautiful poem by the French writer Charles Péguy, comes to mind as I reflect on the gift of hope. He wrote “On the Portico of the Mystery of Hope” from his own experience, and it offers some beautiful insights on the relationship between the virtues of faith, hope and love.

The end of the Invest in Kids Act?
The Illinois legislature abandoned nearly 10,000 children attending Catholic and other non-public schools Nov. 9 by failing to renew the Invest in Kids scholarship program. Since 2017, Invest in Kids has empowered low-income families to choose the school that best meets their child’s needs, providing them the same options more affluent families have.
