Sr. Yolanda Mulvaney

Educator

Sinsinawa Dominican Sister Yolanda Mulvaney died Jan. 18 at St. Dominic Villa, Sinsinawa, Wis. She has been a member of the community since 1929. She taught elementary school for 31 years at schools in Illinois, Wisconsin, Nebraska, Minnesota and Iowa.

In the Archdiocese of Chicago, she taught at Visitation (1930-44); Immaculate Conception in Waukegan (1944-45) and St. Thomas More (1956-58). She also lived in community at St. Thomas the Apostle Convent from 1964-79.

Edward Jordan

Relative of employee

Edward Jordan, 19, died March 14. Mr. Jordan is the nephew of Karen Whitehead, office manager of the Annual Catholic Appeal in the Department of Stewardship and Development. A funeral service was held March 22 at Mt. Carmel M.B. Church.

Fr. Werner Shadeg

Missionary in New Guinea

Divine Word Missionary Father Werner Shadeg, 86, died April 5 at Divine Word Residence, Techny.

A native of Union Hill, Minn., he had two brothers who became priests and five sisters who became nuns. He joined the Divine Word Missionaries in 1932 and was ordained in 1945.

Following two years of teaching classical languages at Techny, Father Shadeg was missioned to New Guinea in 1947. There he served as secretary to Bishop Leo Arkfeld, and was made headmaster of a high school on Kairiru Island.

He returned to the U.S. in 1956, earning a master’s degree in education from Loyola University Chicago. He returned to New Guinea two years later and continued to serve at seminaries and high schools. In 2002, he retired to Techny after 55 years of missionary service.

Sr. Mary Bernal Finley

Sister of Mercy Mary Bernal Finley, 81, died March 19 at Provena McAuley Manor in Aurora. A native of Janesville, Wis., she ministered in the business field in Illinois. She served at St. Xavier College, Mercy Hospital, Chicago; Mercy Hospital, DeKalb; St. Joseph Hospital, Aurora; and Mercy Hospital, Marshalltown, Iowa.

Sr. Colette Madden

Educator

Dominican Sister Colette (Catherine James) Madden, 82, died Feb. 6 at the Dominican Life Center, Adrian, Mich. Born in Chicago, she graduated from Mt. St. Mary Academy in St. Charles. She also received a bachelor’s degree from Siena Heights University in Adrian, Mich., a master’s degree in education from the University of San Francisco, and a master’s degree in pastoral studies from Loyola University Chicago.

Sister Colette ministered in education for 33 years in Illinois and California. In the Archdiocese of Chicago, she taught at Queen of Apostles, Riverdale (1973-74); and was the principal at St. Michael in Orland Park (1974-79).

Sister Colette also served as a chaplain (1980-83) and a CPE supervisor (1983-88) at St. Joseph Hospital. She served as a secretary at the National Organization for Continuing Education of Roman Catholic Clergy (1989) and at Regina Dominican High School in Wilmette (1989-90).

She is survived by a brother, Jerome Madden of Willowbrook and two sisters, Sister Michael Mary Madden, an Adrian Dominican, and Sister Bernadette Madden, a Sister of Mercy from Chicago Ridge.

Harriet Garliauskas

Church employee

A funeral Mass for Harriet Garliauskas, 85, a retired 42-year employee of Holy Cross Church on South Hermitage, was offered March 24 at Holy Family Villa in Lemont.

Born in Lithuania, she lived for many years in the Back of the Yards neighborhood. She also served as sacristan at Holy Cross Church.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Antanas, and her son, Vytautas. She is also the mother of Algis (Rene) Silinis, and the grandmother of Jonathan, Kristin and Aleksa.

Ann Shea

Mother of staffer

A funeral Mass was held for Ann Shea April 18 at St. Giles Church, Oak Park. Mrs. Shea is the mother of Barbara Shea Collins, director of parish services in the Department of Stewardship and Development. Interment was at Queen of Heaven Cemetery.

Mrs. Shea was preceded in death by her husband John. She is survived by her children, Gail Wolfkiel, John, and Barbara Shea Collins; nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Sara Demma

Educator

A funeral Mass was offered April 11 at Notre Dame de Chicago Church for Sara (Cosentino) Demma, a Catholic schoolteacher for over 40 years.

Mrs. Demma taught primary grades in Catholic schools on the near West Side. Beginning in 1959, she taught at Notre Dame, Our Lady of Pompeii, Holy Family (May Street) and Children of Peace (Holy Trinity, Taylor Street). As one school closed, she went on with students to another nearby. She prepared hundreds of youngsters for reconciliation and first Eucharist. A mentor for many young teachers, she was admired for her beautiful classrooms and happy students.

Mrs. Demma was preceded in death by her husband August. She is survived by her son Michael and her sister Roselyn Panepinto.

Donald Wichlin

Facilities manager

Donald Wichlin, 73, facilities manager at Cardinal Stritch Retreat House, Mundelein, died April 30. A funeral Mass was offered May 3 at St. Paul the Apostle Church, Gurnee, and interment was at Ascension Cemetery. He received a bachelor’s degree from Northwestern University and a master’s degree from Lake Forest College. He is survived by his wife Patricia, seven children, 12 grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
