Sr. Lenora Stein

Educator, business officer

Dominican Sister Lenora Stein, 99, died Oct. 6 at St. Dominic Villa in Sinsinawa, Wis.

Born in St. Louis,she made her first religious profession as a Sinsinawa Dominican in 1933 and final profession in 1936.

In the Archdiocese of Chicago, Sister Stein taught at St. Barnabas, 1933-40.

Sr. Suemas Dunn

Culinary artist

Dominican Sister Suemas Dunn, 80, died Aug. 23 at St. Dominic Villa in Sinsinawa, Wis.

Sister Dunn served as a culinary artist for 29 years and as support staff for 24 years in Wisconsin, Illinois, Iowa and Maryland. In the Archdiocese of Chicago, Sister Dunn served at Trinity Convent in River Forest (1962-63); St. Vincent Ferrer in River Forest (1963-69); and St. Giles Convent in Oak Park (1969-77). She also served at St. Thomas the Apostle School (1977-94) and Trinity Convent in River Forest (1994- 2001).

Sr. Antona Mueller

Homemaker

School Sister of St. Francis Antona (Olydia), Mueller, 84, died Aug. 24 at Campbellsport, Wis. She was born in Charlestown, Wis., and made her profession of vows in 1944.

Sister Mueller served as a homemaker at convents in Illinois and Wisconsin. She was a homemaker at Our Lady of Good Counsel Convent, 1950-63.

Sr. Josephine LaMantia

Educator, principal

Dominican Sister Josephine (Philip Marie) LaMantia, 92, died Oct. 8 at the Dominican Life Center, Adrian, Mich. Born in Chicago, she received degrees from Siena Heights College in Adrian, and DePaul University in Chicago.

In Illinois, Sister LaMantia ministered for 42 years in education. From 1951 to 1961 she taught at St. Rita, Visitation in Elmhurst, and St. Denis. She served as principal at the former St. Matthew School on Chicago’s West Side, 1961-64. From 1964-88 she ministered as a teacher at Queen of Apostles in Riverside, Santa Maria Del Popolo in Mundelein, Our Lady of Good Counsel, Chicago; and St. Albert the Great in Burbank.

In addition, Sister LaMantia also served as a parish volunteer from 1989-97 at St. Albert the Great Parish.

Jerome J. Schambari

Father of educator

Jerome J. Schambari, 86, died Sept. 1. Mr. Schambari was a familiar smiling face to many in the archdiocese by his attendance at events and having helped his daughter Virginia, a teacher in the archdiocesan schools since 1964. He was also a benefactor of the Sisters of Providence in Indiana.

A concelebrated funeral Mass was offered at St. Paul of the Cross Church in Park Ridge.

Mr. Schambari was preceded in death by his wife Gladys and their son, Joseph.

Sr. Eustella Fau

Educator, Librarian

BVM Sister Eustella Fau, 89, died Oct 5 at Marian Hall in Dubuque, Iowa. She was born in Chicago and graduated from Sacred Heart School and St. Mary High School. She entered the BVM congregation in 1937 and made her final vows in 1944.

Sr. Eustella taught at Holy Name Cathedral High School from 1948-56 and 1963-66. She was a librarian at Clarke College, Dubuque, and was a librarian and professor of library administration for 15 years at the University of Illinois, Urbana. In retirement, Sr. Eustella lived at Wright Hall, Chicago, from 1987-2002 and taught courses in art.



.Sr. Ellen (Cordelie) Kerr

Educator

BVM Sister Ellen (Cordelie) Kerr, 79, died Oct. 7 at Mercy Medical Center, Dubuque, Iowa. Sister Ellen was born Dec. 5, 1925 in Superior, Colo. She entered the BVM congregation in 1944, and professed final vows in 1952.

She was a teacher at St. Gertrude, (1947-50, 1960-61) and Our Lady of Lourdes (1950-56).

Sr. Luciola Cloutier

Educator, sacristan

School Sister of St. Francis Luciola Cloutier, 99, died Oct. 8 at Sacred Heart Convent in Milwaukee, Wis. Born in Winsted, Minn., Sr. Luciola served the Archdiocese of Chicago for 40 years. She was an elementary teacher at Sts. Cyril and Methodius School (1934-35), St. William School (1953-65), and Blessed Agnes School (1965-84). She also served as a part-time sacristan at Blessed Agnes Parish in Chicago (1985-93)

Sr. Annamarie Cook

Foundress

Sister Annamarie Cook, 91, foundress of Sisters of the Living Word, died Oct. 20 after suffering multiple injuries in an automoble accident. She was returning from a St. Gregory High School reunion when the accident occurred.

Born and raised in Chicago, she was orphaned early in life. At 21 she entered the Sisters of Christian Charity and began a long career of service. From 1949-58 she was teacher and then principal of St. Gregory High School. She became dean of Mallinckrodt College and in 1965, became provincial superior of the Sisters of Christian Charity of the North American Western Province.

Sister Annamarie’s term began during the challenging times of the Second Vatican Council. She emphasized mutual respect and interdependence with an awareness of personal gifts for the needs of the church and world.

By 1975 at the suggestion of a representative in the Vatican office for religious congregations, Sister Annamarie led 90 Sisters who shared her view of religious life, to establish a new community: the Sisters of the Living Word. She was unanimously chosen first major superior.

She held this position until 1980 when she asked the order to accept her resignation from this office. In 1983 she was acclaimed the foundress “who gave direction and strong leadership” to her flourishing community.
