Sr. M. Clarice Kowalik

EDUCATOR

Felician Sister Mary Clarice Kowalik, 91, died Aug. 14 in Chicago.

A native of Blue Island, she joined the Felician sisters in 1936 from St. Stanislaus Parish in Posen. She ministered as a teacher, principal and librarian for 64 years in Illinois, Wisconsin and Minnesota.

In the Archdiocese of Chicago, she was assigned to St. Turibius (1938-44); Ascension, Evanston (1944-47); St. Bruno (1947-48, 1985-92); St. James (1952-55); St. Helen (1958-59); St. Isidore, Blue Island (1968-70); St. Joseph (1970-79); St. Hubert, Hoffman Estates (1984-85); Good Shepherd (1992-93); and St. Linus (1993- 98).

Sr. Dorothy Johnson

TEACHER, LIBRARIAN

School Sister of St. Francis Dorothy (Mercy) Johnson, 85, died Aug. 30 in Campbellsport, Wis. Sister Dorothy was a teacher and librarian in Illinois, Wisconsin and Rome. In the Archdiocese of Chicago, Sister Dorothy taught at St. Anne School, Barrington (1944-46) and at St. Benedict Grade School (1956-62). Sister Dorothy is survived by her brothers Louis and Lawrence.

Mr. Richard Tivy

BROTHER OF TWO PRIESTS

Mr. Richard Tivy, 67, whose two brothers are priests, died Aug. 26.

Mr. Tivy was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 134. He was a parishioner at St. Thomas Becket Parish, Mount Prospect.

He is survived by his wife, Annette and children Chris and Paul Clauson;, Mary Kolodziejski; Connie Gjertsen; and Rick, Mike and John Tivy, as well as Father Thomas Tivy, pastor of Resurrection Parish, and Father Gerald Tivy, pastor of St. Joan of Arc Parish in Lisle.

Sister M. Dolorita Purgett

TEACHER, BOOKKEEPER

Sister of St. Joseph Mary Dolorita Purgett, 95, died Sept. 1 in La- Grange.

She was an elementary and high school teacher for 25 years, serving for many years at Nazareth Academy in LaGrange Park.

She also was the bookkeeper and treasurer for her community for 12 years, and she worked in various capacities in the business offices of schools sponsored by her community.

For the last 25 years, she offered clerical support in the sisters’ health care department.

Sister M. Joanita Walsh

TEACHER, LIBRARIAN

Providence Sister Mary Joanita (Ellen Catherine) Walsh, 99, died Sept. 1 in St. Mary-of-the-Woods, Ind.

A Chicago native, she ministered as a teacher for 34 years in Indiana, Oklahoma and Illinois. She then served as a librarian and in various positions at Mother Theodore Guerin High School (now Guerin Prep) in River Grove before retiring.

In the Archdiocese of Chicago, she served at Providence High School (1939-42, 1950-54); Marywood High School, Evanston (1942-45, 1968-70); St. Columbkille High School (1963-68); and Mother Theodore Guerin High School (1970-89).

Br. Leo Gilskey

TEACHER, ADMINISTRATOR

De La Salle Christian Brother Leo (Isidore Conrad) Gilskey, 91, died Sept. 6 in Chicago. Born in Montana, he attended St. George High School in Evanston for one year and then transferred to La Salle High School in Glencoe, Mo. He taught high school classes and was a school and college administrator in Texas, Missouri, Minnesota, Michigan, Indiana and Illinois. In Chicago he served at various times as principal at Old St. Patrick High School, St. Mel High School, and De La Salle Institute and was superintendent of Bishop Noll Institute in Hammond, Ind.

He worked in the development office of the Christian Brothers from 1978 until his retirement in 1988.

Four sisters survive him: Lucille Hahn of Westchester; and Rita McIntyre of Ottawa, Ill; Marybelle O’Leary of East Dennis, Mass.; and Loretta Clark of Lowell, Ind

Sr. Marguerite LaMothe

TEACHER

School Sister of St. Francis Marguerite (Ovid) La Mothe, 92, died Sept. 10 in Milwaukee.

A Michigan native, Sister Marguerite lived her religious ministry in New York, Illinois and Wisconsin as a teacher, principal, reading specialist, tutor, clinician, and office clerk. In the Archdiocese of Chicago, Sister Marguerite taught at Our Lady of Perpetual Help School, Glenview (1940-1943); at St. Beatrice School, Schiller Park (1952-1954); and at Holy Angels School (1962- 1963).

Sister Marguerite is survived by a brother, George, and sisters Eunice Wagner and School Sister of St. Francis Ruth La Mothe.

Sr. Patricia Schafke

CONVENT COORDINATOR

Sister of St. Joseph-Third Order of St. Francis Patricia (Jacinta) Schafke, 76, died Sept. 10.

Sister Patricia, a Detroit native, ministered in education for 15 years in Mississippi, Indiana, Ohio and Michigan. Since 1991, she had served as convent coordinator at her congregation’s Immaculata Convent in Bartlett, and she was a key player in the development of the Clare Oaks Retirement Community, which was built on the convent property.

She is survived by her sisters, Agnes Ratke and Elizabeth Augustine.

Sr. Wilhelmina Jahns

CHICAGO NATIVE

Servite Sister Wilhelmina Jahns, 95, died Sept. 18 in Wheeling.

Sister Wilhelmina was a Chicago native who had been a parishioner at St. Columbkille Parish.

Sr. Therese Craig

FOUNDED CHILDREN’S THEATER

Adrian Dominican Sister Therese (Rose Terrence) Craig, 81, died Sept. 11 in Adrian, Mich.

Born in Detroit, she ministered in education, mostly in Michigan and Canada.

Sister Therese was the founder of Siena Heights Children’s Theater in 1965, the first in southeast Michigan. She was a faculty member for 16 years at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada.

Sister ministered in education for one year in Chicago, as a teacher at Our Lady of Good Counsel (1947-48)
