Parish Pride

By Dolores Madlener

St. Julian Eymard Church

601 Biesterfield Road, Elk Grove Village

This parish sits astride Elk Grove and Schaumburg townships, adjacent to Alexian Brothers Hospital. (The first pastor’s residence was in the hospital for a time.) Parishioners worshipped in a high school from 1968 to 1978, when a single- story, all-purpose church building, designed by Joseph Cimino, was finally built. Parishioners were patient, and progressive, with a permanent deacon in place by 1975. Named for Peter Julian Eymard, “the saint of the real presence” whose feast day was Aug. 2, there is eucharistic adoration available on first Fridays. It is a busy neighborhood of single family dwellings, condos, townhouses and senior citizen residences. Parishioners cooperate in a “community of churches” food pantry that includes Baptists to Buddhists. Young families in the school of religion are supported through a focus on faithcentered events geared to them. Walking the talk in terms of stewardship, this “collegial” parish will begin a program for returning Catholics this fall.
