St. Giles Church
1025 Columbian Ave., Oak Park
What a history here: From 1927’s plain Sears Roebuck portable church, to 1950’s “last of a kind … architectural achievement unparalleled in American history,” (words of “Heavenly City” author Denis McNamara of this treasure designed by McCarthy, Smith and Eppig.) Its interior exemplifies one of the most richly furnished sacred spaces in the diocese. There are stunning Florentine mosaic stations of the cross, an elaborate main altar with baldachino, vibrant stained glass from Germany, carved oak and artistry in bronze.
Just as this house of God contains diverse ornamental elements from classic to art deco, its people of God also blend a variety of gifts. Commitment to “total stewardship” is the fruit of their sense of gratitude for God’s blessings. Fifty-five ministries give concrete witness. Teens and adults travel as far as Africa and Appalachia to lend a hand; the school and alumni are spirited; and as proof that St. Giles is not all-work-and-no-play, its fall block party draws a multitude.
