St. Mary of the Woods
7033 N. Moselle Ave.
This has always been a hands-on parish. Providentially, two early parishioners were architects Michael F. Gaul and John C. Voosen, who designed the plans. Another parishioner, Louis Slezak, was general contractor. The edifice had to be enlarged in 1966 as its faith community grew. The airy worship space holds 17 magnificent stained glass windows depicting Mary by Max Ingrand of Paris. He also created its stations of the cross, said to be the “most beautiful mosaics in the archdiocese.”
Covering the Edgebrook/Wildwood area in the city’s northwest corridor, the parish now has 65 active lay ministries and organizations. Besides social, charitable and family-oriented activities, its outstanding Fine Arts Council arranges for periodic cultural events like the Irish Tenors or Lira Ensemble. Thanks to good liturgy and strong music, when believers meet around the table of the Lord, it’s a welcoming celebration they take the label “Catholic” literally.
