Father James J. Martin
Pastor, dean
Father James J. Martin, 73, pastor of St. Dorothy Parish and administrator of St. Felicitas Parish, died Sept. 10. Father Martin was named St. Dorothy pastor in 2001 and appointed St. Felicitas administrator in October 2002.
He was born in Evergreen Park and attended Most Holy Redeemer elementary school. He graduated from Quigley Preparatory High School and the University of St. Mary of the Lake in Mundelein.
Following ordination in 1968 he became assistant pastor of Mary Queen of Heaven Parish in Cicero. In 1973, Father Martin was appointed assistant pastor of Presentation Parish, where he served until becoming pastor of St. Agatha Parish, in 1978. He served there for 11 years, also as dean.
In 1989, he began a six-year term as pastor of St. Benedict the African Parish East, followed in 1995 by a six-year term as pastor of St. Benedict the African Parish West, where he also served as dean.
Mass was offered Sept. 19 at St. Dorothy by Cardinal George.

Sr. M. Anne Moll
Educator, dietician
Holy Family Sister M. Anne Moll died July 6. She was a member of the Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth for 67 years. She taught for 23 years in several elementary and secondary schools in the Archdiocese of Chicago. She was also a dietician and later ministered as a pastoral associate at St. Mary of Nazareth Hospital.
Sr. V. Jedrzejewski

A funeral Mass for Sister of St. Joseph Virginette Jedrzejewski, 95, was offered July 20 at the convent chapel in Bartlett. She ministered as a high school teacher at St. Mary of Perpetual Heart and at St. Barbara schools, both in the Bridgeport neighborhood.
Sr. Mary Ann Rooney
Educator
Sister of Mercy Mary Ann Rooney, 95, died July 16 at Mercy Convent in Chicago. A native of Chicago, she taught at St. Gabriel; St. Xavier Academy; St. Mary of the Lake; St. Thomas; Holy Rosary; St. Catherine of Genoa; Queen of Martyrs, Evergreen Park; St. Cecilia and St. Raymond, Mt. Prospect; Little Flower; St. Paul of the Cross, Park Ridge; Christ the King; and Mother McAuley High School.
Sr. Margaret Rose Hoy
Chicago-born educator
School Sister of St. Francis Margaret Rose (Thomasita) Hoy, 83, died July 15 at St. Joseph Convent in Campbellsport, Wis.
Born in Chicago, she entered the School Sisters of St. Francis community in 1941. She ministered in education and hospice care in Illinois, Texas and Wisconsin, serving at archdiocesan schools for 27 years. She taught at St. Matthias School, 1945-48; St. Benedict Grade School, 1948-51; and St. Joseph in Wilmette, 1951-53. She was also coordinator of reading at St. Celestine School, Elmwood Park, 1974-81 and teacher and librarian at St. Matthias, 1981-93.

Sr. Marilyn Lee
Educator
Dominican Sister Marilyn Lee, 93, died July 12 at St. Dominic Villa, Hazel Green, Wis. She made her first religious profession as a Sinsinawa Dominican in 1931 and her final profession in 1934. Sister Lee was a grade school teacher for 58 years. In Chicago she taught at St. Barnabas, 1956-57.
Sr. M. Rudolphine Slarski
Educator
Sister of St. Joseph Mary Rudolphine Slarski, 88, died July 25 at Immaculata Convent in Bartlett.
She was a member of the Sisters of St. Joseph, TOSF, for 71 years. Sister Slarski spent most of her years serving as an educator in the Archdiocese of Chicago.
Sr. Elizabeth Daly
Educator
Dominican Sister Elizabeth “Betsy” Daly, 71, died July 18 at the Dominican Motherhouse, Sinsinawa, Wis.
Born in Chicago, she made her final profession as a Sinsinawa Dominican in 1957. She taught at elementary schools for 19 years and music and theology for 13 years. She served in Wisconsin, Illinois, Maryland and California. In the Archdiocese of Chicago, Sister Daly taught at St. Giles, Oak Park, 1974-7; and Trinity High School, River Forest, 1976-87.

Fr. Cecil C. Pickert
Educator and counselor
Carmelite Father Cecil C. Pickert, 73, died July 28 in Washington D.C. Born in Kansas, he was a member of the Order of Carmelites of The Most Pure Heart of Mary Province.
Ordained to the priesthood in 1958, he received several academic degrees including a master’s. in biology from Notre Dame University in Indiana.
He also received training as a counselor and spiritual director from the Jesuit School of Theology in Chicago.
He was an educator at schools throughout the country and in Canada, along with serving at parishes, including Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, Darien.

Sr. M. Myra Martell
TEACHER
Mercy Sister (Macy) Myra Martell, 79, died July 27 at McAuley Convent in Aurora, where she had resided since her retirement in 1996.
A native of Fort Dodge, Iowa, she was a Sister of Mercy for 50 years. Sister martell served as a teacher in Illinois and Iowa.
In the archdiocese she taught at St. Paul of the Cross, Park Ridge; Holy Family in North Chicago (now closed); Holy Rosary (now closed); St. Raymond, Mt. Prospect; Resurrection on Jackson (now closed); and Willow Bend School, Rolling Meadows.

Deacon Israel Valentin
ministered at st. philomena
Deacon Israel Valentin, ordained for the archdiocese in 1978, died July 30. A funeral Mass was offered for Deacon Valentin on Aug. 4 at St. Philomena Parish, where he ministered.
Sr. Ellen Marie Conners
Educator, homemaker
School Sister of St. Francis Ellen Marie (Christantia) Conners, 86, died Aug. 10 at St. Joseph Convent in Campbellsport, Wis.
Born in Indianapolis, she entered the School Sisters of St. Francis community in 1938 and made profession of vows in 1940.
She served as a homemaker, a teacher and in parish ministry in Illinois, and five other Midwestern states.
In the archdiocese, she served as a homemaker at Alvernia High School Convent, 1940-41; St. Clara Convent, 1942-43; Blessed Agnes Convent, 1943-45; and St. Joseph Convent, Waukegan, 1946-50. She also taught at St. Mary School, Buffalo Grove, 1951-54, and Our Lady of Perpetual Help School in Glenview, 1975-81, along with
serving in the parish ministry at Our Lady of Perpetual Help, 1981-2000.

Sr. Bride Hanley
Chicago-born teacher
BVM Sister Bride Hanley, 90, died Aug. 5 at Caritas Center in Dubuque, Iowa. She was born in Chicago and attended St. Francis de Sales and Englewood high schools. She entered the Sisters of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in 1936.
She served as an educator in Chicago for more than 40 years at St. Charles, now closed, 1939-41 and 1957-63; St. Dorothy, 1949-57 and 1963-68; Our Lady of Lourdes, 1969-70; St. Vincent, 1970-76; and Holy Name Cathedral, 1976-89. She was also on the office staff of Mundelein College.

Sr. Dorothy C. Haertlein
Medical technician, chaplain
School Sister of St. Francis Dorothy Catherine Haertlein, 80, died Aug. 4 at St. Joseph Convent in Campbellsport, Wis. Born in Milwaukee, she entered the community in 1944.
She served as a medical technician, chaplain and patient representative at hospitals and health centers in Arizona, Illinois and Wisconsin. In the archdiocese, she was a medical technician at Community Memorial General Hospital, LaGrange, 1968-71 and 1972-80; and at Community Memorial General Hospital, Countryside, 1971-72.

Sr. Elvira Golden

Dominican Sister Elvira Golden, 90, died Aug. 1 at St. Dominic Villa, Hazel Green.
Born in Chicago, she made her first religious profession as a Sinsinawa Dominican in 1934 and her final profession in 1937. Sister taught at SS. Faith, Hope and Charity in Winnetka, 1965-69; and ministered at St. Sabina in Chicago as a junior high teacher, a remedial reading teacher, the finance secretary and the finance assistant, 1969-2000.

Mary Lou Bland
Counselor’s mother
Mary Lou Bland died Aug. 31 in Lancaster, Penn. She was the mother of Michael Bland, pastoral-clinical coordinator for the Assistance Ministry Office of the Archdiocese of Chicago.
Bridget Agnes Garvey
Priests’ mother, grandmother
A funeral Mass for Bridget Agnes Garvey was offered Aug. 10 at St. Gertrude Church, Chicago. Principal celebrant was her grandson, Father Edward Pelrine of St. Celestine Church, Elmwood Park.
Mrs. Garvey, 97, died Aug. 7. She was a native of Ireland and a parishioner of St. Gertrude’s since 1941. She was also a long-time member of the Legion of Mary. Survivors include two sons, John and Michael, three daughters, Claire DiProva, Aileen Pelrine, and Rita O’Connor, 21 grandchildren and 28 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Thomas, her daughter, Catherine Therese, and her son, Sacred Heart Father Thomas Garvey, former provincial superior of the Sacred Heart Fathers in Hales Corners, Wis.

Sr. Canisilde Hesse
Nurse
Holy Spirit Missionary Sister Canisilde Hesse, 90, died July 31 at the Convent of the Holy Spirit, Techny.
She joined the Holy Spirit Missionary Sisters in the Netherlands in 1939 and began studies for nursing training.
After coming to the United States in 1949 she served in hospitals and nursing homes in Illinois, Wisconsin, Maryland and Mississippi. In her later years Sister Canisilde worked in the medical records office at St. Therese Hospital, Waukegan.

Sr. Carolyn Glach
teacher
Benedictine Sister Carolyn (Angela) Glach, 97, died Aug. 5. Born in Pueblo, Colo., she professed her vows as a Benedictine Sister of St. Scholastica in 1927. She attended DePaul University and taught elementary school for over 45 years in the Chicago area, Colorado and Arizona.
She taught at Mother of God, Waukegan; in Chicago at St. Joseph on Orleans Street and St. Symphorosa, and worked in summer programs at Queen of All Saints Basilica School and St. Joseph. In addition, Sister Carolyn also taught religious education classes to children enrolled in public schools, served as a parish sacristan and trained altar servers.

Sr. Angela Garlat
Educator
Sister of Providence Angela (Augusta) Garlat, 96, died Aug. 5 at the motherhouse in St. Mary of the Woods, Ind.
Born in Rockford, Ill., she entered the Sisters of Providence in 1927 from Our Lady of Sorrows Parish in Chicago. She taught school in Galesburg for 24 years and for 12 years in the Archdiocese of Chicago at Marywood and St. Athanasius, both in Evanston; St. Andrew, Chicago, and St. Alexander, Palos Heights.
She also taught in Indiana and did community service at the motherhouse in St. Mary of the Woods, Ind. from 1984 until her retirement in 1988.

Margaret Mary Munin
Volunteer for 40 years
A funeral Mass for Margaret Mary “Peggy” Munin, 79, was offered Aug. 13 at Our Lady of the Woods Church, Orland Park. Mrs. Munin died at home Aug. 10 after a long illness.
Wife of Arthur C. Munin, she did volunteer service for over 40 years at St. Bede the Venerable Parish, Little Company of Mary Hospital gift shop, for the St. Vincent de Paul Society, and other causes. Also surviving are her sons and daughters, 13 grandchildren and a sister, Marie Coffey.
Donations may be made to the Mother Cabrini League, 434 W. Deming Pl., Chicago, IL 60614.

Fr. Francis X. Grollig
Loyola Professor
Jesuit Father Francis X. Grollig, professor emeritus of anthropology at Loyola University Chicago, died Aug. 20 at the age of 83.
He was born in Ohio and received a bachelor’s degree in Latin in 1947 and a master’s degree in history and philosophy in 1950 from Loyola University. Before ordination he taught at St. Xavier High School, Cincinnati, and Loyola Academy, Wilmette.
He was ordained in 1953 and in 1955 became a teaching fellow in Loyola’s history department. He earned his doctorate in anthropology from Indiana University in 1959. That same year, he founded and became chairman of Loyola’s anthropology department.
Fr. Grollig began programs where students traveled to Mexico and Peru to study. In 1989, he became director of the Latin American studies program, a position he held until his 1992 retirement.
He is survived by a sister, Sister Alma Grollig, and a brother, Jesuit Father Anthony J. Grollig.

Sister Agnes Boddington
College professor
Sister of Providence Agnese (Mary) Boddington, 95, died Aug. 26 at the Sisters of Providence motherhouse in St. Mary of the Woods, Ind. Born in Melrose, Mass., she entered the religious community in 1925. She was a teacher for 45 years; 16 years in different departments at St. Mary of the Woods College, in Indiana. Her assignments in the Archdiocese of Chicago were at St. Andrew School and Our Lady of Sorrows. She also worked for 12 years in management and services through St. Mary of the Woods Co-op shop, which she began.

Sr. Frances Ann Volkmann
Navy nurse in WW II
Charity Sister Frances Ann Volkmann, 91, died Sept. 5 at Seton Residence in Evansville, Ind. She was born in Kingston, Wis., and graduated from the School of Nursing at St. Mary’s Hospital in Milwaukee in 1932. She served in the Navy Nurse Corps during World War II, working at hospitals in California. She was honorably discharged in 1946.
Sister Frances Ann entered the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul in 1947. For the next 25 years, she served as a nurse at Daughters of Charity hospitals in Chicago, St. Louis, New Orleans, Alton and Birmingham. She also served as a patient visitor for St. Mary’s Hospital in Milwaukee; as the local superior at Seton Manor in Evansville, Ind. and at St. Mary’s Hospital in Saginaw, Mich.

Sr. Genevieve Wilken
Parish Minister
BVM (Lourdes) Sister Genevieve Wilken, 97, died Sept. 3 at Mercy Medical Center, Dubuque, Iowa. Born in Chicago, she attended Holy Angels and Holy Cross schools. She entered the BVM congregation in 1927.
She ministered in the Chicago Archdiocese for 23 years at St. Pius, 1931-35; St. Eulalia, Maywood, 1935-40; Sacred Heart, 1940-42; St. Charles, 1942-46; St. Callistus, 1946-47; Immaculata High School, 1968-70; and St. Jerome, 1974-78, where she was parish minister.

Sr. Julie Ann Burns
Educator
Dominican Sister Julie Ann (Elizabeth Rita) Burns, 85, died Sept. 5 at the Dominican Life Center in Adrian, Mich. She was born in Detroit and for 50 years, she ministered in education at schools in several states. In Chicago, she taught at St. Laurence Parish, now closed, 1939-50, 1954-58; and at St. Ailbe Parish, 1965-67.

Sr. Margaret Gallagher

Sister of Providence Margaret (Marie Blanche) Gallagher, 90, died Aug. 31 in St. Mary-of-the-Woods, Ind. Born in Chicago, she entered the Sisters of Providence in 1932 and professed her final vows in 1940. Sister Margaret taught at schools in Indiana, Illinois, the District of Columbia, California and Taiwan. In the Chicago Archdiocese, she served at Marywood High School in Evanston, 1951-54, 1964-65; and Providence High School, 1954-58, 1960-62; both are now closed.

Sr. Virginia Gaume (Matilde)
Educator
Sister Virginia Gaume, BVM (Matilde), 96, died Sept. 4 at Marian Hall, Dubuque, Iowa. She taught music at St. Mary High School, Chicago (1931-47) and taught music for 50 years at Clarke College, Dubuque, serving as chair of the department for 26 years.
She was born in Argonia, Kan, and graduated from Mount Carmel Academy, Wichita, before entering the BVM congregation Feb. 2, 1928. She professed first vows on Aug.15, 1930, and final vows on Aug. 15, 1936.

Sr. Celeste Beauregard, OP
teacher
Adrian Dominican Sister Celeste Beauregard, formerly known as Evelyn Ann Beauregard, died at the Dominican Life Center in Adrian, Mich. She was 94.
The Hillman, Mich., native received a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Siena Heights (College) University in Adrian.
She spent 29 years ministering in education in Michigan, Illinois, Ohio and Florida. She was principal at St. Nicholas Tolentine School, Chicago, from 1949 to 1952. She retired in 1979 and volunteered her services in several parishes in Michigan.

Sr. Antona Mueller
Homemaker
School Sister of St. Francis Antona (Olydia), Mueller, 84, died Aug. 24 at St. Joseph Convent, Campbellsport, Wis. She was born in Charlestown, Wis., and made her profession of vows in 1944.
Sister Antona served as a homemaker at convents in Illinois and Wisconsin. She was a homemaker at Our Lady of Good Counsel Convent, 1950-63.

Sister Amadeus Rolinger
Teacher
Sister of Providence Amadeus (Emma) Rolinger, 95, died Aug. 10 at St. Mary of the Woods, Ind.
A Freeport, Ill., native, she entered the Sisters of Providence in 1928. She taught in Indiana, Illinois and California, teaching all elementary grades and junior high. In the archdiocese her assignments were at St. Mel and St. Mel-Holy Ghost; Our Lady of Mercy, Maternity BVM and St. Andrew School. She then served 15 years at St. Vincent Children’s Home, and at St. Vincent Community Living and Supervised Living facilities in Freeport.
She served at the motherhouse of St. Mary of the Woods from 1986-2001 when she retired.
