Sr. Mary Christina Frieders

Business Administrator

Sister of Mercy Mary Christina Frieders, 91, died August 11 at McAuley Convent in Aurora. Born in Naperville, she entered the congregation in 1945. She served as a business administrator at schools and hospitals in Iowa, Illinois and Wisconsin until her 2001 retirement. In Illinois, she served at St. Xavier College, St. Joseph Hospital, Mercy Center and Mercyville in Aurora.





Sr. Marianne Hagan

Teacher, Administrator

Dominican Sister Marianne Hagan, 96, died August 12 at the Dominican Motherhouse, Sinsinawa, Wis. She entered the community in 1932. Sister Marianne served as a teacher and administrator for 51 years at schools in Wisconsin, Illinois, Minnesota and Maryland.

In the Archdiocese of Chicago, she taught at St. Mary School, Evanston (1962-1965) and at St. Basil School (1967-1969).



Sr. Antoine Speyrer

Hospital Worker, Nurse

Daughter of Charity Sister Antoine (Rita Colette) Speyrer, 87, died July 22 at Seton Residence in Evansville, Ind. She entered the congregation in 1945. She served as a nurse, surgery supervisor and patient representative in hospitals in Texas, Tennessee, California, Indiana, Illinois and Michigan. From 1966-74, Sister Antoine worked as an administrative assistant at St. Joseph Hospital, Alton.



Joseph Schaeffer

Father of Priest

Joseph Schaeffer, 84, the father of Father Bradley Schaeffer, died August 17 in Chicago. Father Schaeffer presided at the funeral Mass at St. Genevieve Parish.



Harold Stranger

Father of Priest

Harold Stranger, Sr., the father of Father Harold Stranger, died September 2. Father Stanger presided over the funeral Mass at Holy Cross Church.



Sr. Cecile Morse

Educator

Sister of Providence Cecile (Mary Louise) Morse, 97, died Sept. 2 at Mother Theodore Hall, St. Mary of the Woods, Ind. Born in Kentucky, she entered the congregation in 1937. Sister Cecile taught and ministered at schools in Indiana and Illinois, including spending 41 years at St. Mary of the Woods Printing Office. In Chicago, she taught at Mother Theodore Guerin High School, River Grove as an attendance officer and secretary (1980-83).



Fr. Eugene Keusal

Priest

Father Eugene Keusal, 71, died of Sept. 6 at Resurrection Life Center, Chicago. Born in Chicago, he was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese in 1961.

Father Keusal served at St. Robert Bellarmine, St. Simeon, St. Peter, Antioch, St. Anastasia, Waukegan, St. Joseph, Wilmette St. Francis deSales in Lake Zurich and as Pastor Emeritus of St. Mary of the Annunciation Parish, Mundelein. He also authored a number of books, including "The Story of George," the story of Cardinal George's vocation, with the hope that it would increase vocations for the Archdiocese of Chicago.



Gerald Brennan

Father of Finance Director

Gerald Brennan, father of Tom Brennan, Director of Finance for the Archdiocese of Chicago, died Sept. 1. Mr. Brennan's funeral Mass was celebrated at Incarnation Church, Palos Heights.



Robert Gallagher

Benefactor

Robert E. Gallagher, 83, chairman of Arthur J. Gallagher & Co. insurance brokerage and founder of the Gallagher Scholars Program, died Aug. 30. In 1994 Mr. Gallagher and his wife endowed the program, which operates through the Big Shoulders Fund.

Sr. Julia Ann Rogers

Educator

School Sister of St. Francis Julia Ann (Salvatora) Rogers, 88, died Aug. 21 at Sacred Heart Convent in Milwaukee, Wis. She entered the community in 1936

Sister Julia Ann served as an educator in Illinois, Wisconsin, Nebraska, Indiana, Iowa, Georgia and Arizona. In the Archdiocese of Chicago, she taught at St. Cyprian School in River Grove (1940) and St. Joseph School in Wilmette (1940 - 1941), and served as an education consultant at Follett Education Corporation in Chicago (1969 - 1971) and in N. Riverside (1971 - 1972). She was a secretary at NCR Systemedia in Chicago (1972 - 1973).



Sr. Mary Cramer

Educator

BVM Sister Mary (Assisium) Cramer, 94, died Aug. 31 at Marian Hall, Dubuque, Iowa.

Born in Chi-cago, she entered the congregation in 1931. Sister Mary taught at schools in Iowa, Illinois and South Dakota. In Chicago, she taught at Immaculata High School, (1940-45), and Mundelein College (1953-68), where she later returned to direct the Center on Aging from 1981-93.

Memorial Mass for Johannes Cardinal Willebrands

Johannes Cardinal Willebrands, 96, died Aug. 3. He was a founding member of the Vatican's Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity (PCPCU), set up during the papacy of John XXIII in 1960. During the Second Vatican Council, Cardinal Willebrands contributed to the writing of four conciliar documents, including the Decree on Ecumenism. A pioneer in both ecumenical and Christian-Jewish relations, he was president of the PCPCU, which includes the Pontifical Commission for Religious Relations with the Jews, from 1969-1989. A memorial Mass for the repose of his soul will take place Sept. 17 at Holy Name Cathedral. The Most Rev. Basil Meeking, Special Consultant to Cardinal George, will be the principal celebrant. Rev. Meeking worked for 18 years in the PCPU with Cardinal Willebrands. Cardinal George will be present at the Mass.
