Parishes, others sponsor relief efforts

Catholic churches across the Archdiocese of Chicago continued to take up special collections for Hurricane Katrina throughout September, and several parishes and other organizations planned special relief efforts. They include:

  • In the week after Hurricane Katrina hit, Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Chicago provided housing to six families displaced by the storm and its aftermath. Three moved into Solace Place, on the South Side, and three moved into the Maryville Academy campus in Des Plaines.

In addition to housing families, Catholic Charities provided crisis counseling, food and clothing to evacuees who are calling daily for assistance.
  • Father George Clements, a priest of the Archdiocese of Chicago, called on congregations across the country to adopt families struggling in Katrina’s aftermath.

Clements invited parishes interested in sponsoring a family, as well as families who lost their homes in the disaster, to call (888) 282-8484.
  • St. James Parish in Arlington Heights is working with officials from various relief organizations in an effort to adopt a family from the disaster region to provide housing in a vacant home acquired by the parish. For information call (847) 253-6305.
  • Young Adult Ministries and Old St. Patrick’s Church are working with Catholic Extension to rebuild a destroyed Catholic church in the Diocese of Biloxi, Miss. For information, visit www.yamchicago.org or call (312) 466-9473.

St. Raymond de Penafort Parish in Mount Prospect, in association with GIA Publications, will sponsor an evening of liturgical and sacred music at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 7. Four of the nation’s foremost Catholic Church music composers, Tony Alonso, Gary Daigle, Marty Haugen and Michael Mahler, will combine their talents in a concert benefiting the relief efforts for victims of Hurricane Katrina.

Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for students, children 8 and under free. They will be available at the door or by calling (847) 253-8600 Ext. 136. St. Raymond de Penafort Church is at 301 S. I-Oka Ave., Mount Prospect.
