Mater Christi opens its 50th jubilee year at a 2:30 p.m. Mass Sept. 28, with three bishops who have been connected with the parish presiding.
The two-story, modern Colonial style edifice dedicated in 1953 will seat a precious 225. Designed by architects Belli & Belli, its intimate interior of wood and brick is the familiar worship space for many third-generation parishioners in this tree-lined community.
Todays mix of families is actively engaged in parish life, reaching out to the vulnerable or confined, tending a food pantry and enjoying the support of a St. Vincent de Paul Society and one of the most active Holy Name Societies in the archdiocese.
Special prayers for expectant mothers are recited here on Saturdays. Its outdoor shrine to Mother of Mothers (a marble likeness of Mary and Jesus with a contemporary mom and her baby) was dedicated in 1956, and the devotion continues in 100 countries.
