Local response to Iraq

In Chicago, Catholic activists who have made recent visits to Iraq are spreading the word about the situation the people there face.

An attack on Iraq “at this lime” would probably create more problems than it would solve, Loyola University’s Father Richard Woods and lay minister Sheila Provencher warned a Feb. 9 forum at St. Clement Church in Lincoln Park.

Woods, a Dominican, said the U.S. would be morally jumping the gun by attacking Iraq since not all diplomatic avenues have been exhausted. Efforts by the United Nations and some Arab and European governments still haven’t run their course, Woods said.

Dominican Sister Beth Murphy of Springfield, Ill., will talk about her most recent journey to Iraq Feb. 27 at St. Viator High School, 1213 E. Oakton St., Arlington Heights. Murphy will make her multimedia presentation twice, “Seeing Iraq: Opening the Door to Peace” at 3:15 p.m. and again at 7 p.m. Both sessions are open to the public.
