Jim Towey: “Certainly government money can be use by faith-based organizations to feed the hungry and house the homeless.”

Cardinal George: ‘A man and a woman are able to take the risk of loving each other completely because they know themselves to be loved completely and faithfully by God. ’
Observations, by Tom Sheridan: 'There’s something missing from your Catholic New World this issue. And that’s a shame.'

A busy school and social center are an integral part of this community of faith, where everyone knows their neighbor and many are actually related.

Coming together
Conference celebrates social services, health care ministries
When more than 1,100 delegates from Catholic Charities USA and the Catholic Health Association gathered in Chicago Aug. 3-5, they came to celebrate a joint heritage of service to the poor and vulnerable and joint spirituality of caring.

Father Bryan Hehir, president of Catholic Charities USA, and Father Michael Place, president and CEO of the Catholic Health Association, welcomed delegates by harkening back to the first 12 Ursuline sisters who arrived in New Orleans 275 years ago, establishing the first Catholic health and social services in what would become the United States.

Local charities show off model programs
People who need help in the Auburn-Gresham neighborhood in Chicago can talk with a social worker, get referrals for job training or transitional housing, select food at a Women, Infants and Children food center or find senior housing at St. Sabina Elders Village-all within about three blocks of St. Sabina Parish.

Delegates to the Catholic Charities USA annual meeting visited the facilities Aug. 2 on one of two local tours arranged by Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Chicago to highlight local programs.

In their own words: WYD2002
Chicago young people who journeyed to Toronto to take part in World Youth Day 2002 share their reflections of the epic event in their own words.

‘Lord, make me an instrument of your ... music’?
Tuneful therapy finds a hospital home
Music, it’s said, has the power to “soothe the savage breast.” It also has the power to heal.

St. Mary of Nazareth Hospital is putting into practice the sense that music therapy is not a whim, but a valid clinical experience with medical results like improved ability to fight disease, decreased hospital stays, and developing skills to deal with pain or stress.
