Mary Hallan FioRito

999. . . . Mary Hallan FioRito, 35, was one of Newsweek’s Women of the 21st Century” in its Jan. 8 issue. Her career as director of the arch’s Respect Life Office for six years and as its first woman vice chancellor was spotlighted. So was the happy news she will give birth to her first child, expected in June.

Sign of the times —- An outspoken signboard in front of a Christian Church in Palos Park reads: “Why does a woman’s right to abort her baby supersede God’s right to create one?”

Union label: The 1,000-member Catholic Council, a fraternal organization of Local 3 of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers in New York City, is 65 years old. Members meet monthly at a parish in Manhattan and once a year have a Communion breakfast after Mass at St. Patrick’s Cathedral. When they learned of the need to upgrade lighting systems throughout the five-building cathedral complex they voted to make it a priority. An initial donation by one contractor of $14,000 mushroomed and ultimately the men have donated $1 million in labor and materials. About 60 guys worked Saturdays or Thursday nights and installed 20 spotlights on the outside of the historic cathedral for security. They rewired and installed outlets—even washed the cathedral’s chandeliers and added stronger lamps. The work will continue for another year with the union laborers not asking for anything and enjoying “doing something good.”
