Father Tolton Pilgrimage

A group of 30 Catholics from around the archdiocese attended a weekend pilgrimage to the sites of Father Tolton's early life in Quincy, Ill., and Brush Creek, Mo. The trip took place Sept. 17-19 and was sponsored by the archdiocese's Office for Black Catholics, Bishop Joseph Perry's Office and the Tolton Program at Catholic Theological Union. Father Augustus Tolton attended St. Peter Catholic School in Quincy, Ill., as a boy. This statue was commissioned for the centennial of his death in 1997 and stands in front of the school building. The first St. Peter School opened in 1861. It was located south of the church and was staffed by the School Sisters of Notre Dame.
