Pilgrims gathered around Father Tolton’s grave site to say a prayer for the cause for his canonization during one of the last stops on the pilgrimage. Tolton collapsed and died from heatstroke on July 9, 1897, after returning to Chicago from an annual priests’ retreat. He was 43. Father Tolton is buried at St. Peter’s Parish Cemetery in Quincy.
