Father Tolton Pilgrimage

A group of 30 Catholics from around the archdiocese attended a weekend pilgrimage to the sites of Father Tolton's early life in Quincy, Ill., and Brush Creek, Mo. The trip took place Sept. 17-19 and was sponsored by the archdiocese's Office for Black Catholics, Bishop Joseph Perry's Office and the Tolton Program at Catholic Theological Union. This marker in the cemetery behind St. Peter's Church in Brush Creek shows the gravesite of Stephen Elliot, one of the slave owners of the Tolton family. Prior to the Tolton’s escape, the Elliots had all their slaves baptized.
