Bishop Blase J. Cupich of Spokane, Wash., said the Catholic Church opposes legalizing same-sex marriage but at the same time the church "has no tolerance for the misuse" of the issue "to incite hostility toward homosexuals." His comments came in an Aug. 3 letter to Catholics of the diocese. Washington state voters will be asked Nov. 6 to accept or reject a law redefining marriage to include same-sex unions.
