A quiet morning before a day of construction in August 2007 for the then-new St. Raphael Church, a renovated machine shed on a former farm in Antioch. St. Raphael, Chicago's first new parish since 1999, celebrated it's first Mass on Sept. 1. The 200-seat temporary church—furnished with religious items and fixtures from several closed Chicago parishes—is the congregation’s home for the next five or six years, giving the new parish time to attract members and build a new church on property the archdiocese owns about a half-mile away. Cardinal Francis George dedicated the new worship space on Sept. 29.
