Sr. Mary E. Quinn
TEACHER, SUPPORT STAFF
Sister Mary E. (Margaret Kathleen) Quinn, 82, died July 2 at the Dominican Life Center in Adrian, Mich.
Sister Mary was born in Detroit. She spent 37 years ministering in education in Chicago and Lombard, Ill., and in Massachusetts, Michigan, Ohio and Washington, D.C. In the archdiocese, she taught at St. Rita Parish (1951- 57), Queen of Angels (1957-72) and St. Laurence (1962-65) and served as school secretary at St. Martin (1975-78).
She also served as an office manager and administrative staff member, including 11 years at the archdiocese’s Office for Catholic Schools (1982-93).
She is survived by two sisters, Peggy Chaney of Michigan and Kathleen Baron of North Carolina.
Sr. Elizabeth Lawson
ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT
Sister of St. Joseph Elizabeth Lawson, 83, died June 24.
Sister Betty, a Chicago native, taught for 20 years, primarily at St. Hugh, Lyons; St. Anthony; and St. Barbara, Brookfield. She then served another 20 years as administrative assistant at St. Barbara.
Sr. Angelica Dwyer
TEACHER, COUNSELOR
Sinsinawa Dominican Sister Angelica Dwyer, 94, died June 26 in Sinsinawa, Wis.
Sister Angelica was an elementary and junior high school educator for 49 years and was also a counselor five of those years. She served in New York, Nebraska, Wisconsin and South Dakota in addition to Illinois.
In the Archdiocese of Chicago, Sister Angelica taught at SS. Faith, Hope, and Charity, Winnetka (1939-1941, 1942-1944 and 1969-1973); Visitation (1947- 1949); St. Mary, Evanston (1949-1954) and St. Richard, (1959-1962).
Fr. John Swift
PRISONER IN CHINA
Divine Word Father John Swift, 92, a Divine Word Missionary and master printer who worked in China, England and the United States, died July 4 in Techny.
Father Swift, then known as Brother Matthew, made news in China on Christmas Day 1950.
A Minnesota native, he worked for nine years as a pressman in Techny. In 1947, he went to manage the Catholic press of the Bishop of Tsingtao, China. It was a large operation that printed materials in eight languages, producing not only Catholic literature but also commercial pieces.
In 1950, he refused to publish passages of a textbook that contradicted the Catholic faith. For that act, he spent almost three years in a Communist jail.
Upon his release, he returned to Techny and the printing press operation, where he worked until 1960. He then went to England to promote “Word” magazine by speaking at parishes.
In 1972, he entered the Mission Institute in London to study for the priesthood, and he was ordained in 1975. During his priesthood, he worked in parishes and as a vocation director in England and Scotland before returning to Techny in 1996.
Father Swift is survived by his sister, Geraldine Flessor.
Sr. Lenore Joyce
PRINCIPAL, SUPERVISOR
Sister Lenore Joyce, 78, died July 10 in Sinsinawa, Wis.
She was an elementary teacher, principal and supervisor and taught and supervised at the college level. Sister Lenore promoted the use of Guiding Growth in Christian Social Living (aka the “Green Bible”), a curriculum project begun in the 1940s by Sinsinawa Dominican Sisters Mary Nona McGreal and Joan Smith, throughout the United States. She ministered as the thesis director at Villa Schifanoia, Florence, Italy, for six years. Sister Lenore served in Maryland, the District of Columbia and Wisconsin, in addition to Illinois and Italy.
In the Archdiocese of Chicago, Sister Lenore taught at Immaculate Conception, Waukegan (1929-1938). She worked at Rosary College (now Dominican University), River Forest, in the admission office (1981-1994), and in the curriculum department (1998-2000).
She is survived by two brothers, Edward and Joseph Joyce.
Sr. Brideen Keane
EDUCATOR
BVM Sister Brideen Keane, 90, died July 14 in Dubuque, Iowa.
A native of Chicago, she graduated from St. Mary High School and attended M u n d e l e i n College before entering the congregation.
In the Chicago Archdiocese, Sister Brideen taught at Our Lady Help of Christians (1941-46); St. Dorothy (1959-61); St. Callistus (1961-65); and St. Peter, Antioch (1975-91). She tutored at Santa Maria del Popolo, Mundelein (1992-92) and tutored in ESL at St. Mary of the Lake Seminary, Mundelein (1993-99).
She was also an educator in Missouri, Iowa, Arizona and Oregon.
Sr. Bernadette Smith
EDUCATOR
Sinsinawa Dominican Sister Bernadette Smith, 79, died July 14 in Sinsinawa, Wis.
Sister Bernadette ministered as an elementary teacher, director of special education for the Chicago Archdiocesan Office of Education, director of religious education, pastoral minister and director of the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults. Sister Bernadette served in Wisconsin, California, Colorado, Iowa, Texas, Oregon and New Mexico, in addition to Illinois.
In the Archdiocese of Chicago, Sister Bernadette taught at St. Patrick, Lemont (1955-60) and St. Philip Benizi (1960-1964). She ministered in the Archdiocesan Office of Education as the director of special education (1964-1971).
