Our Lady of Mercy Church
4432 N. Troy Street, Chicago
Architects Barry & Kay designed the present church, dedicated on the parish’s golden jubilee in 1961. Its beauty still inspires pride in today’s worshippers.
Their Web site says, “We have come from everywhere, to this one place, bringing the richness of many cultures and traditions to this one faith....” It is a parish with many choirs, many prayer groups and youth groups, yet always struggling to include more people. Diverse, mostly young immigrant families, they have learned tolerance and have embraced a sense of ownership in this faith community. A relationship with their sister parish of St. Clement’s has even included a free legal clinic.
Children are valued here and liquor is never served at a parish event, not even the big International Fest in the spring. It’s a warm place. People say, “It feels like home.” Home is a good place when you have traveled together on a long journey.
