SS. Peter and Paul Church
12433 S. Halsted St.
It began as a national parish for Lithuanian-speaking Catholics in this West Pullman neighborhood. Then came the typical post-WWII building boom with a welcoming of many nationalities. In 1958 a new church was builta “modern-Gothic” standard design of Fox & Fox architects, with the addition of a bell tower.
The attractive church interior has accents in sheet marble and goldleaf, a stained glass window in the choir loft, and a large crucifix focusing worshippers on Mass as sacrifice. There are Blue Army devotions, prayers to the Divine Mercy, and the intercessory prayer connected with spiritual adoption of the unborn.
It is an aging parish. When the faithful gather, some travel a distance. Their spirit seems to say: “Let us go to the altar of God, to God who gave joy to our youth.” They find faith alive here and friendships that grow stronger through the years.
