Ascension-St. Susanna
15234 Myrtle Ave., Harvey
They try harder at Ascension-St. Susanna. It isnt easy to see your church close and move on to a neighboring one, but folks did it in 1985. The edifice that survived is the original Ascension Church, dedicated by Archbishop James Quigley in 1911. Its not a big church at 100 by 54 feet, but its a beautiful place where everyone has worked at becoming a family.
In this blue-collar mix of mostly African-Americans with about 15 percent Caucasians and Hispanics, there are active parish societies, religious ed, a food pantry, and door-to-door evangelization. They are part of the archdioceses Spreading Gods Holy Fire program, and committed to community concerns.
Since its located near the Little Calumet River and two expressways, surrounded by smaller suburbs, visitors are bound to drop in for Sunday Mass. They remark how at home they feel. Unlike that ancient inn, theres a welcome mat here.
