Ascension-St. Susanna
15234 Myrtle Ave., Harvey

They try harder at Ascension-St. Susanna. It isn’t easy to see your church close and move on to a neighboring one, but folks did it in 1985. The edifice that survived is the original Ascension Church, dedicated by Archbishop James Quigley in 1911. It’s not a big church at 100 by 54 feet, but it’s a beautiful place where everyone has worked at becoming a family.

In this blue-collar mix of mostly African-Americans with about 15 percent Caucasians and Hispanics, there are active parish societies, religious ed, a food pantry, and door-to-door evangelization. They are part of the archdiocese’s “Spreading God’s Holy Fire” program, and committed to community concerns.

Since it’s located near the Little Calumet River and two expressways, surrounded by smaller suburbs, visitors are bound to drop in for Sunday Mass. They remark how “at home” they feel. Unlike that ancient inn, there’s a welcome mat here.
