St. Lawrence OToole
4101 St. Lawrence Ave., Matteson
When this parish began 45 years ago, the contemporary style church, designed by Ray Ignelzi, was to be only a temporary edifice. It has remained and been enhanced.
Encompassing a 36-square-mile area, the parishs ethnically and racially diverse parishioners know the meaning of sacrifice and stewardship. Among a variety of spiritual and human concerns, the St. Vincent De Paul Society remains very active, PADS is open on Friday evening,s October to April, and there is a Couples to Couples program. Evangelization is ongoing with the help of five parishioners ordained to the permanent diaconate and the school and religious education flourish.
To mark the 45th year of this parish named for a 12th century Irish prelate, a Lenten Mission, Feb. 12-16, will be followed by a dinner-dance on Feb. 26. They continue to live out their mission statement: We aspire to be a people of prayer, vision, service and invitation.
