Infant Jesus of Prague
1131 Douglas Ave., Flossmoorr
Its Flossmoors first and only Catholic church, founded in 1955, with the Illinois Central commuter train its early link with downtown Chicago, 25 miles to the north. Cardinal Samuel Stritch took a personal interest in its construction insisting that the edifice be a thing of beauty. It is, with Lombardy-style architecture, a lofty campanile, the interior paneled with South American combed white oak and Carrara marble statues. One tier of stained glass windows has abstract images. The ones at eye-level hold phrases from the Litany to the Infant Jesus, but the rose window with the infant in the center is a crown jewel over the choir loft. (A major millennium campaign renovation will take place by the end of the year.) Charity is a lived virtue here, exemplified in part by the efforts of 50 various ministries. It is a first-, second- and third- generation parish, with plenty of hospitality for newcomers.
