Divine Providence Church
2550 Mayfair Ave., Westchester
The Divine Providence family has come a long way from its origins in 1956 amid farmland and unpaved streets.
Cardinal Bernardin dedicated this second church 30 years later. Its modern edifice has walls and ceilings with interesting angles, a blending of various textures and a large skylight near the sanctuary over the Risen Christ.
Parishioners are energetic and somewhat eclecticnot many parishes have a quilting group or Drama Ministry. Five or six times yearly they present a life picture of the Gospel: for instance, Palm Sunday 2004 saw the pastor riding from the Ministry Center to the church on a live donkey.
The heart and soul of the parish is also reflected in its young people, who sort foodstuffs donated by parishioners and assist in distributing them to needy parishes.
A vigorous prayer life here includes choirs, First Friday Eucharistic Adoration, Benediction and the recent addition on third Fridays of Taize prayer.
