St. Stephen Deacon & Martyr
17500 S. 84th Ave., Tinley Park
This newest parish and church in the archdiocese was designed by architect Terry Russell of LZT/Filliung, Inc., and dedicated in 2002 by Cardinal George.
Because its patron saint was one of the first deacons and the first martyr, themes of service and witness are important here. Parishioners in this active community of over 1,800 families in the growing Southwest suburban area come from older established parishes that provided their faith roots.
Besides a new central window and large crucifix by Daprato Rigali Studios, there are 12 stained glass panels from the former St. Lawrence Church in Chicago and outdoor stations from the former St. Leo Church.
A greeters ministry and a welcoming committee of friendly people, coffee and pastries welcome new or familiar families after the 10 a.m. Mass twice a month.
Theres a tradition of generosity here that already includes a monthly food drive for area needy as well as a fourth annual St. Joseph Table.
