Queen of Apostles Church
207 West 145th St., Riverdale
The Little Calumet River makes up the north and northwest boundary lines of this southeast suburban parish that takes in all of Riverdale and sections of Harvey, South Holland and Dolton.
The edifice, dedicated in 1954, designed by Fox & Fox architects, is modern and functional, yet clearly a place that is sacred and holy. A large stained glass window over the choir loft depicts Mary, Queen of Apostles in vivid primary colors. Windows along the nave embody religious symbols. A crucifix behind the altar is a focal point in its clean and simple interior.
Generosity is characteristic of this small congregation. It is most evident in their support of the Millennium Campaign, the parishs food pantry and their Christmas Giving Tree. Longtime parishioners continue to work the weekly bingo that currently benefits both church and school. Worshippers in this area of transition remain rooted in faith.
