Queen of the Universe Church
7114 S. Hamlin Avenue
When your church is within the flight pattern of Midway Airport, your airspace becomes the crossroads of the universe. Until the government installed soundproofing in Queen of the Universes church-school building last year, homilies and lessons stopped whenever jumbo jets roared overhead.
This was meant to be a temporary church, but in 1970 plans changed and it was renovated, modern stained-glass windows installed and a carillon erected that chimes at noon and for special events. Its Marian patron has several likenesses, including a recent addition of Our Lady of Guadalupe, responding to the devotions of its newest parishioners from Mexico. American and Hispanic cultures either blend or run parallel here. In this busy working-class community, successful parish societies from the Queens Guild to St. Vincent de Paul and scouts reach out to shut-ins, the underprivileged and even the U.S.O.
English-as-a-Second-Language classes meet once a week. In a parish where cultures are blending, dialogue is the aim, 24/7.
