Sr. Ann McCahill
assistant to Cardinal George
Sister of Providence Ann Trinita McCahill, 66, administrative assistant to the cardinal, died Nov. 19.
A Chicago native, Sr. Ann entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Providence in 1955, professed her first vows in 1957, and her final vows in 1962. She began her ministry in teaching, serving for 17 years at schools staffed by the Sisters of Providence in Illinois and Indiana. In the Archdiocese of Chicago she taught at St. Sylvester from 1967-75, and at St. David from 1975-76.
She then ministered in federal and local government systems in Chicago. She worked for the Chicago Health Systems Agency from 1976-77 and the Department of Health, Education and Welfare from 1977-87.
Sr. Ann then worked for the Office of Legal Counsel for the Archdiocese of Chicago from 1988-1992. She became administrative assistant to the Cardinal in 1992, serving in that capacity under Cardinal Joseph Bernardin and Cardinal George.
Sr. Marcella Hess
Teacher, former prioress
Adrian Dominican Sister Marcella (Ellen Joseph) Hess, 90, died Nov. 30. A native of Maybee, Mich., she was in the 73rd year of her religious profession in the Adrian Dominican Congregation.
She spent 48 years ministering in education in several states. In the Archdiocese of Chicago she served at St. Matthew, Chicago, from 1929-30 and 1931-33; Our Lady of Counsel from 1934-36; St. Rita from 1936-41; and at Aquinas High School from 1951-52.
She served as councilor and provincial of the Immaculate Conception Provincial House from 1969-74. She later served as pastoral minister for the congregation and as chapter prioress of the Motherhouse chapter from 1987-90.
Fr. William Hock
Pastor emeritus
Father William T. Hock, 81, pastor emeritus of St. Gertrude Parish in Franklin Park, passed away Nov. 26 from complications associated with congestive heart disease and diabetes. At the time of his death, he was a resident of St. Benedict Home in Niles.
Father Hock graduated from Quigley Preparatory Seminary and the University of St. Mary of the Lake in Mundelein. Ordained in 1948, his first assignment was as assistant pastor of St. Francis de Sales Parish on the Southeast Side of Chicago. He served there for 13 years before being named assistant pastor at St. Ann in Lansing.
In 1966, Father Hock began a seven-year term as assistant pastor at St. Gerald in Oak Lawn. Following his service there, he served for two years at St. Isaac Jogues Parish in Niles.
He was named pastor of St. Gertrude Parish in Franklin Park in 1975 and ministered there for 12 years.
For six years, beginning in 1987, Father Hock was the associate pastor of St. Tarcissus Parish. He retired in 1993 and was made pastor emeritus of St. Gertrude.
He is survived by a brother, David, and a sister, Margaret Schultz.
Sr. Gladys Mroz
Home economics teacher
Sister of St. Joseph of the Third Order of St. Francis Gladys Mroz died Nov. 30 from a sudden heart attack. One of five children, she was in the 67th year of her religious profession. She served in Chicago at St. Fidelis and as a home economics teacher at St. Barbara High School and Lourdes High School. Most recently, she lived in retirement at Immaculata Convent, Bartlett. She is survived by a sister, Rose, and a nephew.
Sr. Marie Berg
Teacher
Adrian Dominican Sister Marie Arlene (Elizabeth Bernardine) Berg, 93, died Nov. 27. Born in Detroit, she was in the 72nd year of her religious profession.
She ministered for 49 years as a librarian and teacher in several states. In the Archdiocese of Chicago, she taught at St. Rita Parish from 1930-31, and at St. Mary of Carmel from 1938-47. She is survived by three sisters, Dorothy and Jane Elizabeth Berg, who are both Adrian Dominican sisters, and Rose Berg.
Sr. Pauline Wisdom
Teacher
Sinsinawa Dominican Sister Pauline Wisdom, 96, died Nov. 19. Born in Omaha, Neb., she made her first profession in 1928 and her final profession in 1931. She ministered as an elementary school teacher and a high school business teacher in several states. In the Archdiocese of Chicago, she served at St. Thomas the Apostle High School, 1930-31; Rosary College, River Forest, 1931-34; Trinity High School, River Forest, 1940-44; and Queen of Peace High School, Burbank, 1973-75.
Sr. Francis McDonald
Teacher
Adrian Dominican Sister Francis Eileen (Mary) McDonald, 97, died Nov. 26. A Los Angeles native, she was in the 77th year of her religious profession. She ministered in education for 50 years in several states. In the Archdiocese of Chicago, she taught at St. Rita Parish from 1928-30 and 1938-40; Ascension, Harvey, from 1930-31; St. Laurence, Chicago, from 1931-37; and at St. Columbanus from 1944-47.
Sr. M. Joan Wozniak
Compassionate minister
Felician Sister Mary Joan (Joanne) Wozniak died Oct. 26 at age 91. Born in Chesterton, Ind., she was a member of the Felician Sisters for 74 years.
After teaching for one year in Wisconsin and one year at Holy Innocents School in Chicago (1933-34), her ministerial career became that of filling the need that existed at the time. She served as a culinarian, laundry supervisor, switchboard operator, office assistant, volunteer, and producer of handiwork.
Sr. Mary LeRoy Rowland
Educator, pastoral minister
School Sister of Notre Dame Mary LeRoy Rowland died Oct. 25. A native of Blue Island, she entered the School Sisters of Notre Dame in 1938 and was professed in 1941. She served in Wisconsin and Illinois. In the Archdiocese of Chicago, she served at St. Lucy. She also served for 36 years at St. Helena, Chicago, first in education and then in pastoral ministry.
