St. Victor Church
553 Hirsch Ave., Calumet City
St. Victor’s started out with a pot-bellied stove in a wooden church. As the Depression raged, they finished this timeless Romanesque edifice designed by James Burns and managed to install over 20 “priceless” windows made by Austria’s Tyrolese Art Glass Co. Saints in vibrant panes, from its patron pope-martyr to Julie Billiart, inspire worshippers here.
Music resounding from a refurbished 16-rank pipe organ along with a host of other fine musical resources lifts up the weariest heart in this hard-working community. A recent capital campaign has taken care of immediate necessities.
Generosity and an “appreciation for the care of the poor” are most visible at a monthly collection for the area food pantry. Parishioners’ celebrated cultural diversity, active parish societies, devotions and on-going Scripture study keeps faith flowing here. The outdoor Fatima shrine (above) was donated by its schoolchildren back in 1959.
