Divine Infant Church
1601 Newcastle, Westchester
Divine Infant is a post-war building-boom suburban parish, founded in 1947. This second edifice, dedicated in 1963, was designed to accommodate the growing Catholic population of Westchester.
Architect Thomas W. Cooke pulled out all the stops, with brick, marble, quarry tile, and Celtic and Byzantine motifs in mosaics. Its many stained glass windows are like a catechism framed in stone, with a modern Nativity scene and Our Lords biblical lineage in vibrant colors above the altar. On a sunny day the hues are spectacular.
Parishioners exemplify a blend of ages, ethnic origins and cultures. They are faith- and family-oriented, supportive of their school and public school religion classes.
Ministry of care is big here, as well as Vincent de Paul, monthly holy hours and other activities. Their outstanding music ministry includes dedicated cantors,n adult and a Resurrection choir, youth ensemble and a mens guitar group called Strings of Faith.
