St. Edmund Church
188 S. Oak Park Ave., Oak Park
St. Edmund, founded in 1907, was Oak Parks first Catholic parish. The present 14th century English Gothic edifice, designed by architect Henry Schlacks, was dedicated in 1910. It is a must see church.
Made of blue Bedford stone with an imposing belfry steeple, it lives up to the founders goal not to take second place in works that glorify God. The ceiling of the awesome interior is designer John Mallins exquisite creation and decorated by graduate students of art in Vienna.
In 1999, as a first step in a $2.2 million capital restoration/renovation plan, treasured art glass windows, executed by Munichs Zettler Studios, were restored. From floor to ceiling, the entire house of God has been renewed.
Today its dynamic mix of 1,300 families express faith in many ways, like the parish PADS program. Some 300 parishioners came forward immediately to volunteer. Reaching beyond personal comforts to a larger world isnt written in stone here, just in hearts.
