St. Patrick Church
991 S. Waukegan Road, Lake Forest
The early history of this parish is as fascinating as its new church is inspiring. It began with a shipwreck in Lake Michigan in 1840 and the casualties still rest in the parish cemetery. Founded by Irish immigrant farmers, it remained a quiet rural community until recent years. This cruciform church, designed by architects Hammel, Green and Abrahamson, was dedicated by Cardinal George in 1998 and seats 750. The simple, uncluttered interior, with its angular ceiling and natural light from clear glass windows, offers an idyllic setting for worship. Most of the concrete artwork by sculptor Margot McMahon is the color of the earth in Lake Forest. “Hands” are focal points in many of her distinctive pieces. Altar furnishings as well as a Celtic cross hanging above the altar are made of natural oak. With congenial hospitality and generosity at its core, a high priority here today is living the spirit of stewardship with their sharing parish, Holy Family, in Waukegan.
