St. Anne Church
16802 S. Lincoln St., Hazel Crest
No gothic spires here or imported mosaics. The churchs simple design suits this people with grounded faith.
The brick building, dedicated in 1957, combines worship space with classrooms on an upper floor. The sanctuary was reconfigured about 18 years ago and the pews are now in a pleasant wrap-around arrangement parishioners find inviting. Without a loft, the choir and accompaniment performs adjacent to the altar. A meditative adoration chapel is visible through an open grate at the opposite side.
Within these walls and in the neighborhood thrives a happy comingling of diversity. There are lots of recovering people here, and people committed to justice who pray and then carry the message into the community. Its a suburban parish in an area abandoned by steel companies, fighting decline, with people pushing faith, involvement and hope for a new Peotone airport to bring jobs. The 11:30 a.m. Mass July 28 will celebrate the feast of St. Anne. An awesome potluck lunch follows.
