St. Ailbe Church
9015 South Harper Avenue, Chicago
An old spiritual states St. Ailbes history well: Weve come
a long way, Lord, a mighty long way.
When it was founded in 1892 the area was called Stoney Point due
to a nearby quarry. Over time, this church and its people have
become the cornerstone of something wonderful on the Southeast
Side.
First dedicated in 1955 as a temporary church attached to the
school, its evolution has taken a different path. In 1997, with
a completely renovated interior, the edifice was rededicated by
Bishop George Murry, SJ. Restored pews and its original flashed
glass windows remainthe rest is new.
A time to recreate what God planted in 1892 was the theme running
through the $600,000 transformation, and parishioners have retired
the debt. A stained glass window of St. Ailbe, designed by David
Csicsko, will soon be dedicated.
This parish of older adults, families, singles and kids provides
26 ministries and programs. With membership growing, it also co-sponsors
a large complex for seniors and one for the physically challenged.
