Chicago educator reflects on Holy Land situation
Christian Brother Neil Kieffe has served as an administrator at
Bethlehem University for 10 years, after spending most of his
39-year education career in the Chicago area, including a stint
as principal of St. Patrick High School in the 1980s.
Kieffe recently returned to the Unites States because of a family
emergency. This is what he wrote about the situation in Bethlehem:
Since I only left Bethlehem on Wednesday night (Oct. 18) I am
pretty much up to date on the situation there, although it has
escalated in the immediate vicinity of Bethlehem in the last several
days.
This year has been a disaster for Bethlehem University. So far,
we have only had three days of classes. At this time we should
have had 40 class days. Because of the closures it is impossible
for many of our students and faculty to reach the university.
I am sure that some of the BU students have been involved in the
demonstrations.
Most think it silly to risk their lives, but
there are some who believe it is their duty to do so. Fortunately,
none of our students have been killed.
We keep hoping we will be able to begin the semester seriously
soon, but things appear bleak right now.
