Parish Pride

St. Anastasia Church

The heart of this church is reflected in its recent 75th anniversary “Taste” fest, with homemade dishes that were Armenian, East African, Filipino, Chinese, German, Irish, Italian, Polish, Scandinavian, Spanish, American and African-American. A busy church hall that welcomes bingo players also accommodates a PADS program for the homeless, a soup kitchen and pantry. The red brick church edifice, dedicated in 1964, won awards for its enigmatic design—a modern variation on the plain rectangular hall of Germany’s Trier basilica.

The interior with its great baldachino (photo) looks medieval, but has a contemporary surprise. Behind the altar, multi-colored shafts of stained glass work magic with the sunlight to interrupt dark textured bricks. Don't look for statues, the altar is the focus. Just as Vatican II began, architecture and theology came together here in fashioning a unique communion rail that enfolds the sanctuary. Worshippers indeed gather around the table of the Lord.
