Debris covered charred desks in this photo of a classroom in Our Lady of the Angels School. The Dec.1, 1958, fire at school killed 92 students and three BVM teaching sisters. Remembrance services were held throughout the archdiocese the weekend of Nov. 30 to mark the 50th anniversary of the tragic fire. (Catholic New World file photo)
Franciscan Father Bob Lombardo passes out food to people in need from the community surrounding the Mission of Our Lady of the Angels last June. Volunteers Toya Davis, Royzell Jones and Jim Woods assist Sophia Clark with some groceries for her family. Lombardo, at the request of Cardinal George, is working with the community to build a mission presence in the Humboldt Park neighborhood. So far the rectory and convent have been renovated and are used for the food bank, retreats and other ministries. In January, the mission will rededicate the parish center Kelly Hall, which will be used to provide social services to the community, in partnership with other city groups.
