Thousands of Polish Catholic pilgrims make their way into the Carmelite Shrine in Munster, Ind., Aug. 7. The pilgrims had just completed half of their 33-mile procession from St. Michael Church in Chicago to the Shrine of Our Lady of Czestochowa in Merrillville, Ind. More than 5,000 people participated in the 23rd annual pilgrimage, a centuries-old tradition brought to the U.S. by Polish immigrants.
