Catholics from around the Archdiocese of Chicago participated in St. Patrick's Day related events this year. Photos by Karen Callaway.
The Chicago River is dyed green before the start of the city's St. Patrick's Day Parade March 12. For more than 40 years, dyeing the river a shade of "Irish" green has been a Chicago tradition. Forty pounds of an environmentally safe vegetable dye, which appears orange at first, is used for the task.
