Sr. Rose Louise Schafer

TEACHER, ADMINISTRATOR

Sister of Providence Rose Louise (Agnes Marie) Schafer, 91, died Sept. 5 in St. Mary-of-the-Woods, Ind.

Born in Danville, Ill., she earned three bachelor’s degrees from St. Mary-of-the-Woods College and a master’s degree from the Catholic University of America. She was an educator for 32 years, served as part of the congregational administration, was a director of religious education and a receptionist at Providence Retirement Home.

In the Archdiocese of Chicago, she taught at St. Leo (1936-39) and at St. Athanasius, Evanston (1944- 47).

She is survived by two sisters, Beatrice Steiner and Margaret Whiteis, and four brothers, Louis, Walter, Paul and Thomas Schafer.

Sr. Sue Pietrus

MUSIC TEACHER

Sister of Providence Sue (Susan Anne) Pietrus, 57, died Sept. 13 in St. Mary-of-the-Woods, Ind.

Born in Chicago, she entered the Sisters of Providence at age 24. She earned a bachelor’s degree from St. Mary-of-the-Woods College, a master’s degree from the University of Illinois and a doctorate from the University of Southern California. She ministered in music education for 28 years in California and at St. Mary-of-the- Woods College.

She is survived by her father, Raymond, and sister, Nancy Barr.

Mr. Raymond McCarthy

PRIEST’S FATHER

Mr. Raymond P. McCarthy, 89, died Sept. 12. He was the father of Augustinian Father Thomas Mc- Carthy, president of St. Rita of Cascia High School.

Mr. McCarthy was a U.S. Coast Guard veteran of World War II. He was an electrician who worked for Illinois Bell Telephone for 30 years and for the Chicago Board of Education for 14 years.

Mr. McCarthy was an affiliate of the Augustinian Order, a Fourth Degree Knight of Columbus, a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America, honorary alumnus of St. Rita High School and of Evergreen Park Post #854 American Legion. He was a former longtime member of St. Adrian Parish and Queen of Martyrs in Evergreen Park.

He is survived by his daughters Mary Scopelliti, Carol Kipp and Peggy Walsh, as well as son Patrick, in addition to Father Mc- Carthy, and 11 grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Mary Kelly.

Fr. Charles Mrowinski

PARISH PRIEST, CHAPLAIN

Resurrectionist Father Charles Mrowinski, 77, died Sept. 27 at Nazarethville, Des Plaines.

Father Mrowinski was born in Chicago and attended St. Hyacinth School and Archbishop Weber High School.

In Chicago, he served at St. Stanislaus Kostka, St. Hedwig, St. Stanislaus Bishop and Martyr and Our Lady of Fatima, and he was chaplain at St. Joseph Home for the Aged from 1990- 2003.

He also served in Missouri, California, Alabama and in Canada.

Father Mrowinski was one of the Resurrectionists who started the congregation’s San Miguel Mission in La Paz, Bolivia, in 1959.

Sr. Carol Jean McDonnell

EDUCATOR

Adrian Dominican Sister Carol Jean (George Ellen) McDonnell, 77, died Oct. 4 in Adrian, Mich.

A Chicago native, Sister Carol Jean graduated from Aquinas High School. She spent 22 years ministering in education in Michigan, Ohio and Malawi, and in Homewood, where she taught at St. Joseph (1955-58).

She also worked for the Diocese of Lansing and in congregational administration. Then, from 1993 to 2001, she was the assistant to the executive director of The Night Ministry in Chicago.

Sister Carol Jean is survived by a sister, Janice Petersen.

Sr. M. Luke Livingston

HOMEMAKER, COOK

Sister Mary Luke (Catherine) Livingston, 92, a member of the Sisters of St. Francis of Mary Immaculate of Joliet, died Oct. 5 at Our Lady of Angels Retirement Home in Joliet.

She was born and raised in St. Francis de Sales Parish, Chicago and later returned to minister in the parish for many years.

Remembered for her gentleness and kind-heartedness, she was a devoted homemaker, cook, caregiver and typist, members of her congregation said.

Her final years were devoted to prayer at Our Lady of Angels Retirement Home.

She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings, including her twin sister, Joliet Franciscan Sister Mary Mark Livingston.

Sr. Rafaela Mendoza

MISSIONARY

Our Lady of Victory Missionary Sister Rafaela Mendoza, 100, died Sept. 13 in Huntington, Ind.

Born in Jalisco, Mexico, she served in the missions of Arizona, California, Colorado, Indiana, New Mexico and Texas.

She is survived by two brothers, Ignacio and Gregory, and sister, Teresa Garcia, all in Illinois.
