Sr Madeleine Sophie McLeod

TEACHER

Adrian Dominican Sister Madeleine Sophie (Helen Patricia) McLeod, 81, died on July 20 in Adrian, Mich.

Born in Chicago and educated in Michigan, she spent 52 years ministering in education in Florida, Michigan, Ohio and Puerto Rico, in addition to Illinois.

In the Archdiocese of Chicago, she taught at Bishop Quarter Military Academy, Oak Park (1950-58).

Sr. Marie Consolata Gallagher

TAUGHT AT MOTHER GUERIN

Sister of Providence Marie Consolata (Mary) Gallagher, 93 died July 24 in St. Mary-of-the-Woods, Ind.

Born in Ireland, she entered the Sisters of Providence of St. Maryof- the-Woods in 1932. In the Archdiocese of Chicago, she served at St. Mel (1941-45); Our Lady of Mercy (1947-49); St. Angela (1958-59); and Mother Theodore Guerin High School, now Guerin College Prep (1996- 98).

She also served in the Diocese of Joliet and in Indiana, Maryland and Washington, D.C.

Sr. Edwarda Doyle

NURSE, ORGANIST

School Sister of St. Francis Edwarda Doyle, 79, died July 30 in Fond du Lac, Wis.

A Chicago native, Sister Edwarda ministered as a nurse, teacher aide and organist in Wisconsin, Missouri and Illinois.

In the Archdiocese of Chicago, Sister Edwarda served as a nurse at Resurrection Hospital (1986-1987), Mid-America Convalescence Center in Chicago (1988-1991), and at Nurse Finders in Chicago (1988-1991). Sister Edwarda served as an organist at Santa Maria Addolorata Parish (1991-1993), St. James Parish (1993-1996), Our Lady of Lourdes Parish (1996-1997) and Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish in Glenview (1997-2004).

Deacon Harold Hempen

ST. IRENAEUS

Retired Deacon Harold Hempen, 79, of Park Forest, died Aug. 1.

Hempen, who was ordained in 1994, served at St. Irenaeus Parish in Park Forest until his retirement in 2005. He had worked in management for Stone Container Corp. Hempen, a Korean War veteran, is survived by his wife, Joyce; and three children — Brenda Rusthoven and Ken and Steve Hempen — with his late wife, Lilli; and 11 grandchildren.

Carolyn Farmer

MUSIC DIRECTOR

Carolyn Farmer, 58, died Aug. 2.

She had been the music director at St. Albert the Great Parish in Burbank since 1996 and directed the annual passion play there since 1987.

She is survived by her mother, Theresa Matejko; brothers Daniel, John and Michael and her sister Anne.

Fr. Charles M. Brennan

TEACHER, PASTOR

Servite Father Charles M. Brennan, 87, died Aug. 5 at Our Lady of Sorrows Monastery.

Born in Canada, he received his elementary education at Precious Blood School in Chicago and attended Quigley Preparatory Seminary and St. Philip High School before entering the Servite novitiate. He was ordained a priest on May 27, 1948 at Our Lady of Sorrows Church.

In the Archdiocese of Chicago, Father Brennan was an instructor at St. Philip High School (1943- 1944; 1948-1952, 1955-1957) and Mater Dolorosa Seminary, Hillside, (1964-1967); pastor of St. Donatus Parish, Blue Island (1970-1973) and St. Dominic Parish (1974-1990); and parochial vicar at Assumption Parish, (1990-1991). He retired and lived at Our Lady of Sorrows Monastery from 1991 until his death.

He also served in Ireland, California, Missouri and Michigan.

Father Brennan is survived by his sister Nelzie Widen.

Sr. Stephen Roche

TEACHER

Sinsinawa Dominican Sister Stephen Roche, 96, died Aug. 5 in Sinsinawa, Wis.

She was a primary and intermediate grade school teacher for 45 years and spent two years with children in early childhood and remedial reading programs. Siser Stephen served in Wisconsin, California, Wyoming, and Illinois.

In the Archdiocese of Chicago, Sr. Stephen taught primary grades, early childhood and remedial reading at Epiphany Parish, 1976-2002.

She is survived by her sister, Eleanor Johnson.

Sr. Mary Loftus

CHICAGO NATIVE

BVM Sister Mary (Malachy) Loftus, 84, died Aug. 7 in Chicago.

A Chicago native, she graduated from St. Dorothy School and St. Mary High School before entering the Sisters of Charity, of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

She taught in Iowa, Colorado and East Moline, Ill., and was on the faculty of Javieriana, Bogota, Colombia.

For 35 years, she served in Joliet, Ill., as a bi-lingual teacher at Joliet Central High School, ESL teacher at Joliet Township High School, pastoral associate at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish, emergency services staff member at Catholic Charities, and ESL teacher at the Will County Adult Correction Center. She lived in Chicago for the past two years.

She is survived by a sister, Margaret Loftus.

Margaret O’Connor

BENEFACTOR

Margaret J. O’Connor, nee Sullivan, 86, died Aug. 7.

Mrs. O’Connor and her late husband, John (Jack), donated the proceeds from the sale of their home to help bring the cloistered Carmelite nuns to the Archdiocese of Chicago. Because of the family’s relationship with the Carmelites, they were allowed to be buried in the cloister yard at the monastery at River Road and Central Road in Des Plaines.

Mrs. O’Connor is survived by her children Katie Gawlick, Peggy Macnamara, Susie Creevy, Eunie Nondorf, Dorothea Tobin, Bill O’Connor, Matt O’Connor, Petie Russo, Carmel Cowan and the late Johnny. She was grandmother of 49.
