Guide to Catholic Chicago 2008 Marian Shrines

For the past few years, we’ve taken you on a spiritual tour through the area with the Catholic Guide to Chicago. This year we wanted to explore how much we all love Mary by taking a look at the expressions of honor for her throughout the Archdiocese of Chicago, and there are many.

The entire archdiocese itself, which encompasses Cook and Lake counties, is dedicated to Mary’s Immaculate Conception. And within its borders there are at least 82 parishes named after Mary. There are also a few national shrines to Our Lady here including Our Lady of Sorrows Basilica and National Shrine and Our Lady of Guadelupe Chapel at Maryville in Des Plaines, where thousands flock every Dec. 12 to celebrate the feast of its patron.

So if you’re a native of Chicago or just passing through, take some time to look for shrines to Mary — every parish church has its own as well — and spend some time in prayer getting closer to Jesus through his mother.
