  • ‘Pedalers’ —

    Jim Ryan , long-time parishioner at St. Robert Bellarmine (N. Austin) is cycling from Chicago to Washington, D.C. to help raise money for the parish school that his five children attended. Students and pastor Father Neil Fackler gave him a blessing and sendoff before his trip April 29. Ryan blogs daily along the way, and sends photos so students can keep up with his adventure.   • Echoes of papal visit —

    World Library Publications , the J.S. Paluch Company and some of their artists were Chicago components of the papal visit festivities. John Angotti performed for the pre-Mass gathering at Washington Nationals Park . A Richard Proulx concertato was one of the communion songs at the D.C. and NYC liturgies. Joe Simmons was psalmist for the Mass at Yankee Stadium and Jennifer Pascual served as music director for both N.Y. liturgies. And of course, Paul French composed the processional for the papal Mass at Nationals. Betcha didn’t know J.S. Paluch printed and donated the 50,000+ programs used at Yankee Stadium.
  • Finishing school —

    St. Raphael Parish in Antioch, Ill., has hired a certified etiquette consultant from the Protocol School of Washington , D.C., to present, “ Manners, Protocol and Etiquette Classes ” for youngsters ages 7-12 from 9:30 a.m.-noon and for ages 13- 18 from 12:30-3 p.m. on June 28.     The Women’s Center , prolife outreach, needs volunteer ultrasound sonographers for its Evergreen Park and 5116 N. Cicero offices. (The ultrasound has become a great life-saving tool for expectant moms in difficult circumstances.) Call Mary Strom at (773) 794-1313 for more information.
  • Latin lovers —

    The Canons Regular of St. John Cantius (N. Carpenter), is a new religious community of men dedicated to a restoration of the sacred in the context of parish ministry. Two of its members have recently passed the rigorous Latin exam in order to attend a special intensive summer Latin program in Rome. It will be conducted by Father Reginald Foster O.C.D , the official Latin translator for Pope Benedict . One of the Canons is Br. Brian Schafer, who is serving at St. Peter’s (Volo). The other is Br. Robin Kwan , who was at the parish over Christmas break. Every year, hundreds of Latin students apply for Foster’s two-month summer Latin program, but only a few are chosen.
  • ‘Fireball’ —

    She’s a prosecuting attorney for the state’s attorneys office in the criminal division, and known as “a fireball for the Lord.” Lauretta Froelich , active at St. Luke Parish (River Forest), is on the board of Aid for Women , a prolife pregnancy center, and involved in the Catholic Charismatic Renewal Center of Chicago . She’ll be speaking at a breakfast hosted by Magnificat Ministry on May 17 in Crystal Lake. Magnificat was begun by a group of Catholic women in New Orleans, and born out of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal experience. Magnificat is a way Catholic women can have a faith-sharing experience in a relaxed social setting. (See Page 24)

    Roseland’s Holy Rosary Church (E. 113th St.) will perform its last baptisms on June 22 before merging with St. Anthony Parish (E. Kensington). Its school reunion Mass on June 1 will be celebrated by alum Father Tom Griffin, OSA . . . . Corpus Christi Parish (S. King) will honor Sister of St. Francis Marilyn Freking on her 50th jubilee May 18. She’s ministered and taught at the parish since 1963. . . . Rosalie Trovato of St. Joan of Arc Parish (Evanston) made first vows before Easter, at the contemplative Benedictine Monastery of Our Lady Queen , in Tickfaw, La. Her happy parents are Mario and Ornella Trovato .
  • Right hand man —

    Pope JPII’s secretary for 40 years, now Cardinal Stanislaw Dziwisz [pronounced “Geevish”], will be guest speaker at the June 29 benefit for Bishop Abramowicz Seminary (see Page 24) . His “In A Life With Karol,” available at book stores now in Italian and Polish, is not a “tell all” book, but he does disclose the times the pope would slip out of the Vatican, wearing a Panama hat, to stroll the streets of Rome. He also mentions the Holy Father sharing thoughts on papal retirement. Off the Internet: Artificial intelligence is no match for natural stupidity.
