Msgr. Clifford E. Bergin

VICE CHANCELLOR

Msgr. Clifford Edward Bergin, 80, who served as vice chancellor of the Archdiocese of Chicago and secretary to former archbishops Cardinal Albert Meyer and Cardinal John Cody, died March 9.

An Oak Park native, he was baptized at Our Lady of the Angels Parish on the city’s west side, attended Our Lady Help of Christians Elementary School, and later graduated from Quigley Preparatory Seminary in 1946 and the University of St. Mary of the Lake/Mundelein Seminary in 1953.

Monsignor Bergin was ordained a priest on May 1, 1953, and was named assistant pastor of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish on Chicago’s North Side, where he served from 1953-1960. He was then named master of ceremonies and secretary to Cardinal Meyer and also served as vice chancellor of the archdiocese (1963-1968) while simultaneously serving as secretary to Cardinal Cody and as assistant pastor of Chicago’s St. Aloysius Parish (1966-1968).

He became assistant pastor of Oak Park’s St. Edmund Parish (1968-1973), then served as ministrator of St. Priscilla Parish on the city’s Northwest Side before serving as associate pastor of St. Gertrude Parish in Franklin Park and St. Henry Parish on Chicago’s Northwest side. He retired in 1995 to St. Benedict Home in Niles.

A sister, Patricia Kummerow, survives him.

Sr. Ruth Schiffler

TEACHER AND ADMINISTRATOR

Sister Ruth (Rosula) Schiffler, BVM, 92, died Feb. 6 in Dubuque, Iowa.

She graduated from St. Rose of Lima School and Holy Angels Academy before entering the Sisters of Charity in 1933.

Sister Ruth was an elementary and high school teacher and administrator in Chicago for 34 years.

Her missions were Annunciaton, (1937, 1945-46) Presentation, (1942-1945) Our Lady Help of Christians (1956-1967) St. Vincent (1967-1970) and Immaculata High School (1976-1981).

In semi-retirement, she did pastoral ministry at Cuneo Hospital and Ravenswood Hospital. She also taught in Wisconsin, Missour and California.

She is survived by a sister, Jane Street.

Sr. Mary Thomas Bozekowski

TEACHER

Sister Mary Thomas Bozekowski, 82, died Feb. 8. She was received into the Sisters of the Resurrection on Sept. 12, 1941.

She taught at St. Casimir elementary school (1949-1955, 1967-1971); St. Thecla (1959- 1960, 1963-1965).

Her next assignments were at St. Bede Parish in Fox Lake (1960-1963, 1983-1986); Queen of the Rosary School in Elk Grove Village (1965-1967, 1974- 1979); and St. Mary of the Angels (1986-1990).

She also ran the bookstore at Resurrection High School for 12 years and taught in Indiana, Florida and Ohio.

Sr. Judith Mangin

TEACHER

Sister Judith Mangin died Feb. 10 in St. Mary-of-the-Woods, Ind.

She entered the Sisters of Providence in 1944 and earned degrees from St. Mary-of-the-Woods College and Indiana University. She ministered for 27 years as an elementary teacher in Indiana, Illinois, North Carolina and Washington D.C.

In 1996, she moved to the motherhouse where she managed a used clothing store.

She is survived by a sister Rita Bowling.
