Fr. James P. Keating

PASTOR EMERITUS

Father James P. Keating, 83, pastor emeritus of St. Francis de Sales Parish on Chicago’s Southeast Side, died Feb. 10 in Chicago Heights.

A Chicago native, Father Keating was baptized at St. Gabriel Parish and attended St. Nicholas of Tolentine Elementary School before graduating from Quigley Preparatory Seminary in June 1944, and the University of St. Mary of the Lake/Mundelein Seminary in May 1951.

He was ordained May 3, 1951 and celebrated his first solemn Mass at St. Nicholas of Tolentine Church. He was named assistant pastor of St. Columba Parish (1951-1952). He became assistant pastor of St. Ailbe Parish (1952- 1956) and then assistant pastor of St. William Parish (1956-1964).

Father Keating served as assistant pastor of the now-closed St. Patrick Parish (1964-1968) before becoming assistant port chaplain of the Lake Calumet Harbor (1965-1968) and then chaplain of the Apostleship of the Sea, a ministry of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, whose mission is to minister to maritime professionals while in port. He remained active as a chaplain of the Apostleship of the Sea until his death.

He was appointed assistant pastor of St. Kevin Parish (1968- 1973) before moving to St. Francis de Sales Parish, first serving as assistant pastor until 1979, then as pastor until 2000, when he retired and was named pastor emeritus.

He became a senior priest at St. Michael Parish on Chicago’s South Side where he was active in parish ministry until his recent hospitalization.

Two sisters, Margaret Gaskin and Patricia King, survive him.

Sr. Angelista Klobucher

MUSIC TEACHER

BVM Sister Angelista Klobucher, 98, died Feb. 1 in Dubuque, Iowa.

The Chicago native was a music teacher in Iowa, Illinois, Kansas and California.

She graduated from St. Mary High School, Chicago, entering the BVM congregation on Sept. 8, 1927.

In the archdiocese, she taught at Presentation (1952-53, 1960-63) and Mary Queen of Heaven, Cicero , (1972-81) and also in Pontiac and Lincoln, Ill. Her sister, Gertrude Horan, survives her.

Sr. Marie Kathleen Mitchell

TEACHER

Dominican Sister Marie Kathleen Mitchell, 89, died Jan. 14.

The Chicago native made her first vows as a Sinsinawa Dominican March 8, 1939.

She ministered for 65 years as a teacher, pastoral minister, learning center director, administrative assistant and English as a Second Language (ESL) tutor.

She served in Wisconsin, Illinois, Iowa, New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

In the Archdiocese of Chicago, Sister Marie Kathleen taught at St. Luke, River Forest (1948- 1955) and St. Giles, Oak Park (1963-1965).

She ministered as support staff at Trinity Convent, River Forest, (1998-2001) and volunteered as an ESL tutor at Westside Employment Education Center, Chicago (2001-2004).

Sr. Lawrence Cummings

PRIMARY SCHOOL TEACHER

BVM Sister Lawrence Cummings, 95, died Feb. 3 in Dubuque, Iowa.

A Chicago native, she attended St. Pius and St. Mary High School before entering the BVM congregation on Feb. 2, 1930.

Sister Lawrence taught primary grades in Chicago for 42 years at St. Eulalia, Maywood, 1932-33; St. Dorothy, 1950-57; St. Joseph in Round Lake, 1957-61; St. Pius, 1961-71; and St. Eugene, 1971- 91. She also taught in Iowa and Wyoming.

Fr. Paul Huber

ASSOCIATE PASTOR

Jesuit Father Paul Huber, 93, died Jan. 31 in Clarkston, Mich. He entered the Jesuit order in Milford, Ohio in 1931.

He earned his degrees at West Baden College, Ind. Prior to his ordination, he taught at St. Xavier High School (1939-1942). He was ordained on June 13, 1945 in West Baden.

After ordination, he taught at University of Detroit High School (1945-1951). In 1946 he assisted with parish work at Holy Family Church in Chicago and in 1948 he worked at Cook County Hospital.

Father Huber was associate pastor to St. Xavier Church in Cincinnati from 1951 until he retired in 2005.

Deacon Albert Malec

WORLD WAR II VETERAN

World War II veteran Deacon Albert Malec Sr. died Jan. 23. He had ministered as permanent deacon at St. Daniel the Prophet Church since 1986, when he was ordained.

Deacon Malec worked in several ministerial administrative positions, such as president of the St. Vincent De Paul Society and chaplain of American Legion Post #1112. He was also a member of the St. Daniel bereavement ministry and assistant chaplain at Hines VA Hospital.

He was also a husband to Catherine (nee Searle) and father of Philip, Albert Jr. and Thomas Malec and Mary Giles.

Sr. Mary Sponsa Peca

TEACHER

Felician Sister Mary Sponsa Peca, 96, died Jan. 15.

A Chicago native, she entered the Felicians in 1932. She taught in Illinois and Wisconsin.

In the archdiocese, she taught at St. James, St. Helen, St. Joseph, St. Mary Magdalen and St. John of God parishes. She then ministered to the elderly at St. Andrew Life Center in Niles.

Sr. Therese Marie Janik

TEACHER

Felician Sister Therese Marie (Amabilis) Janik died Jan. 13.

The Chicago native entered the Felicians in 1933 and taught in Illinois, Wisconsin and Minnesota.

In the archdiocese, from 1935 to 1971, she taught at Holy Rosary (North Chicago), SS. Peter and Paul, St. Wenceslaus, St. Stanislaus (Posen), Holy Innocents, Sacred Heart, St. Isidore (Blue Island), St. Helen, St. Mary Magdalen, St. James, St. Turibius and St. Damian.
