Bishop Paul M. Boyle

SUPERIOR GENERAL

Bishop Paul Boyle of the Congregation of the Passion, Holy Cross Province, 81, died Jan. 10 in Louisville, Ky. He, was ordained a priest on May 30, 1953 and a bishop on July 9, 1991.

He taught in Kentucky and Indiana until he was elected Provincial Superior of Holy Cross Province (1968-1976), after which he was elected superior general of the worldwide Passionist Congregation (1976-1988).

Bishop Boyle held several leadership positions, including serving as president of the Canon Law Society of America and later as its executive coordinator (1964-1968).

In 1991, Pope John Paul II appointed him to be the first Apostolic Vicar and Titular Bishop of Canapium in the newly established Apostolic Vicariate of Mandeville, Jamaica. A few months later, he was ordained a bishop. On Dec. 20, 1997, the Diocese of Mandeville was established and he became its first bishop.

Bishop Boyle retired in July 2004 to the Passionist Sacred Heart Retreat in Louisville, Ky., and is survived by his sister, Mary Ansman, and brother, James.

Sister Catherine Joseph Wilcox

Sister Catherine Joseph (Charlotte Alice) Wilcox, 94, died on Dec. 31 in St. Mary-of-the-Woods, Ind. A Chicago native, she entered the Sisters of Providence on Feb. 11, 1939 and earned degrees from Mundelein College and Marquette University. In 1986, she was awarded an honorary doctorate from St. Mary-of-the-Woods College.

In the archdiocese, she taught at Marywood High School, Evanston, 1968-1970; Providence- St. Mel High School, 1970- 1971; Mother Theodore Guerin High School, 1970-2004. She also taught in Indiana.

Sister Joan Rita Timmons

Sister Joan Rita Timmons, 93, died Jan. 21, in Dubuque, Iowa.

She graduated from Sacred Heart High School before entering the BVM congregation in 1932.

Sister Joan Rita taught at Mary Queen of Heaven in Cicero, 1948- 1953, and St. Jerome, 1958- 1964. She also taught in Iowa, New York and Tennessee.

Sister Joan Klega

MUSIC TEACHER

Sister Joan Klega, 76, died on Dec. 21 in St. Mary-of-the- Woods, Ind. She entered the Sisters of Providence in 1951, receiving the name Ruth Cecile.

In the archdiocese, she served at Our Lady of Sorrows, Chicago, 1953-58; St. Athanasius, Evanston, 1958-1974; St. Francis Xavier, Wilmette, 1974-1976; Lutheran General Hospital, Park Ridge, 1977; Children’s Memorial Hospital, Chicago, 1977-1978; Protection Mutual Insurance, Park Ridge, 1979-1981; St. Gerard Majella, Markham, 1984-1988; St. Ann, Hazel Crest, 1987-2002.

She also served as a chaplain in Illinois hospitals (1977-1981) and as a pastoral associate and director of music in Illinois and North Dakota.

Sister Joan is survived by a sister, Kathleen Klega Rourke.

Sister Rita Mary Schweihs

TEACHER

Sister Rita Mary Schweihs, 91, passed away Jan. 24 in Chicago. The Chicago native entered the School Sisters of Notre Dame at age 17.

She taught at All Saints, Chicago (1959-1969), St. Rosalie’s Convent, Harwood Heights (1969-1972), then at St. Constance, Chicago. She next taught at St. James in Highwood (1981- 1983) then at St. Stanislaus Kostka, Chicago, until 1985.

She then served as bursar at now-closed Sacred Heart in Hubbard Woods. At the Academy of Our Lady in Chicago, (also closed), she served as a driver and worked in the school’s finance office.
